Radiator Shop Near Charlotte for Gas Tank Treatment?
« on: March 16, 2011, 08:08:59 AM »
A few months ago someone in my area mentioned a radiator shop that treats rusty gas tanks for reasonable money.  My magic searching ninja skills are weak today  :'(   Does anyone recall this post?  I think it may have been in Rock Hill or Ft Mill?  Thanks!

Don't know the post, but I can tell you about my experience with my tank and a radiator shop...

I think that most OLD radiator shops will do it...had mine done at a mom n' pop in Macon GA.
They cleaned the rust, brazed some rusted-out spots, and coated it with Red-Kote for $35.

The Red-Kote has been great for me so far.

I will say that is a crazy good deal. My first tank 4 years ago cost me $100 for the clean and Red-Kote. My 2nd 2 years ago cost $125. Gosh, how can he do it for $35???

Ah Macongaville - where men are tardy, the women are prompt, and the radiator shops are reasonable!   :D   You are right midnight - an old mom and pop would do the trick.  Shame those are just getting hard to find what with the disposable nature of radiators these days.   I called a local place and was quoted $250 to rot out the rust and coat.  The thread I read mentioned a price < $100.

$250... Does that include a "happy ending?"  :D

There's a radiator shop up here near Raleigh that's charging between $95 and $150 to strip and Red Kote depending on the condition of the tank.

I tried not to smile too big when he told me the price...and I had never met the guy before.  I just walked in and asked them what they'd do it for.  The brazing wasn't planned; he just did it when he saw a couple weak spots after cleaning the rust out.
Hope you can find some folks like I did!

$125US here for the etch and redkote treatment.

$35US is a downright steal.

$125 for boil and red-kote in Brooklyn and it's holding up nice. Only disappointment was that the boil job didn't remove all the paint on the outside of the tank. That would have been nice.

For $35, it may be worth shipping it back and forth.

Darn Right! I hate shipping but I guess since my dad worked for the post office it's as good to patronize them as a radiator shop, especially if it saves a few bucks.

Maybe ask the price for just vatting and then do the redkote at home...
