athena gasket kit/ o ring question?????
« on: April 06, 2006, 09:27:16 PM »
Newbie here recently bought an athena gasket kit for my 76 550. I have matched all of the gaskets but I am haveing some trouble with the o rings.  I have three rings the size of the ones for the orifice valve on the case (page 29, fig 78, part 3  on the manual attached) but what is the 3rd ring for is it just extra? I do not see the two for the cylinder (page 30, fig 82, part 3) are they supposed to be in the kit?  If not any one know where I can find some.  The rings on the bottom of the cylinder linings do I have to remove the linings to get them in and out of there.  They look pretty wedged in there.  Do I really need to replace them anyway ( ones on the linings)?  Just wondering if anyone have had expierence with this kit, any information is greatly appreciated.

I have no experience with athena gaskets but other aftermarket gasket kits I've bough have had gaskets and 'o' rings for everything, including the valve guides. there should be 3 small 'o' rings, one for the cam chain tensioner and the two for the cylinder/ cylinder head  with two larger for the cyl base/crankcase joint. They were not taped inside the packaging anywhere? They are a standard size metric 'o' ring, just cant remember what size ;D I think they are 8mmOD and 1.25mm or maybe 1.5mm dia 'rubber' cross section (been a long time since I measured any) They always leak after a few months ( I got so fed up with it I ended up counter boring the oil passageways and fitting dowels with larger dia.'o' rings to cylinder/cylinder head joint, that cured the problems)
For your other questions, you dont need to remove the cylinder liners to fit new 'o' rings, but they are difficult to get in even without either twisting even after resorting to a blunt screwdriver (although as long as they are not damaged they seem to find their own location)
Interesting manual, still no mention of the gear oil pump that I could see though ( its inside the end if o ne of the transmission shaft bearings, mini trochoidal pump)
