Can I let rebuilt motor sit before installing? How long?
« on: June 14, 2012, 06:07:11 PM »
I am in process of rebuilding my 750 motor; getting machine shop work done and buying parts. How soon do I need to install it , after completion, to ensure proper lubrication on startup? Should I wait before assembling it, until ready to install in bike to start? It may be awhile before I have the rest of the bike ready. Will it hurt the motor to sit for a month or two (who knows?) before startup? Any excess oil would run off, seems to me, but would the residual be enough?  What do you think?

It does not hurt for it to sit for a couple months.

Just turn it over once in a while by hand.

You may want to close all the valves to seal the cylinders from humidity. If it's properly lubed time shouldn't matter.
