Sequence?
« on: April 06, 2006, 10:27:13 AM »
My appologies if this seems like a repeat of earlier asked questions but I am looking for a sequence of events that I have had conflicting info on in the past...

What I am looking for is a sequential order for a tune-up...I know most of the steps but looking for the most effective order

I have already rebuilt the carbs...and a handful of the following steps...

(if I miss anything feel free to point that put as well)

a- Point gap and dwell (dressing them as well)
b- Carb Sync
c- Carb air screw adjustments
d- Cam Chain tension
e- Valve Clearances

I realize there's lots of other little things like new plugs, airfilter etc. but am thinking about stuff that will impact other things in terms of proper order....

Feel free to just list the correct letter order and add any of the additional items I may have neglected...

Thanks in advance guys,
Dennis

I would do:
1. Valves
2. Cam Chain
3. points and timing
4. carbs

I guess I would flip #1 and #2 on the theory that a minor adjustment to the cam chain could affect valves. Then I would adjust the valves. Valid theory?  ???
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

When you adjust valves you turn the crank clockwise to the correct point which means the front side of the cam chain is tight. Some looseness in the rear will not affect valve timing. With that said lets go with cam chain first.

See that's what I am wondering...I don't want to make changes to one that will affect the other and then have to repeat (or not repeat and then wonder why it just doesn't feel quite right).

I'm just not sure of the inter-dependencies of all the parts and how changing one will change the other.

Stuff like...if the timing is out, will I have set the crank to the right point for stuff like cam chain tensioning or even valve adjustments...I just don't know.... ???  ???  ???

Oh...the pressure... ;)

1: cam chain
2: valves
3: replace or dress points, check capacitors
4: point gap, dwell, timing
5: oil and filter and air filter
6: carb clean and bench sync.
7: full carb sync.

Thanks Eldar...my fellow K-8 owner!

Question on the bench Sync....how exactly is that done? I am currently trying to get a carb sync tool to do it properly anyways but...I'm cheap!

Thnaks again guys...I got it running but it's still just not what it seems like it should be...

On a bench sync, you just use a small drill bit and make sure the slides are all open the same amount.
