How to clean oxidation out of intakes?
« on: March 19, 2011, 01:18:22 PM »
Been cleaning up my replacement motor & finally took the carb boots off. #1 and #4 look like this, #2&3 are much cleaner. What's the best way to clean the oxidation off? Acetone? Trying to keep any of that crap out of the cylinders, even though there's probably some down there already.

I would just get some Scotchbrite pads.

scothbrite will definitely work but you will probably end up with a bunch of crud in the cylinder (not good)
i assume you dont want to remove the head, is that correct ?
Funny thing about regret is...... its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

Yeah, the head is staying on. Just want to clean everyting up before I throw it back on the frame.

But really, if a little of it gets down in the cylinder, how bad would that be? I plan on shooting some oil in there before cranking it over to lube the walls some. So should I be worried about it?

How bad would that be?  At first it doesn't sound so bad, but then you remember that Aluminum-oxide is a common abrasive on sandpaper.  It doesn't have to be a problem though.  Just do it one cylinder at a time and turn the engine over and make sure the cylinder you're working on is on its compression stroke - with both valves closed.  Scotchbrite both the intake and if you are going to do it the exhaust ports (why not?) and then blow the debris out with compressed air.  Then move on to the next cylinder.

This is something I do pretty often to clean out tubular openings.  Take a couple of inch section of wood dowel of the largest size you can get away with and cut a slot down its length for any inch or whatever with a hack saw, cut out a square or rectangle of scotchbrite pad and slip it into the slot.  Now put the dowel in your drill and use it in the port like a flap-wheel.  You can do the same thing with emery cloth to make an impromptu small cylinder hone.

Some 400 grit wet-dry sand paper dipped in a little water would not create any "dust" just a little slurry you could wipe out.

Hit 'em with a vacuum first, then some scotchbrite pads (more vacumming) and finally some carb cleaner to wipe 'em down. Came out okay I think.
