Are coils interchangable?
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:36:43 PM »
I have a cb400f that I'm currently working on. I want to replace the plug wires and I've seen the section in the FAQ's about cutting the coil body with a dremel and epoxying new wires in place. What I want to know is can you use coils off other hondas of the same age that have the replaceable leads and will they be just plug and play? I've been searching a lot and can't seem to find a definite answer for this.

I was thinking of maybe trying to pick up a set of 650 coils which the leads can be replaced on like these on ebay:

I have found 70s and early 80s Honda coils to be very interchangeable.
In fact I used those very same coils on my 500 for a while,
just so I could have the replaceable wires.
The only spec you need to worry about is the primary
resistance. You may have to fab your own mounting brackets.
I am currently using side firing coils from a VFR, they work just fine.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

I would also check the secondary to see if they are good then the mounting bolts should be easy to fab a plate if not the same.

I just bought a 1975 CB750K5, and the po has the wiring harness pretty much just laying on the bike. He had bought two new coils, and everywhere I read 'bout coils, its being mentioned blue and yellow wire. All the schematics show this as well. (which I'm sure y'alls know this already) So, I'm into doing a complete rewire on it.

I have a question coming: The two new coils he has installed, have blue wires on both of them.

Is this correct, or will I have to pruchase a different coil that has the yellow wire?

Can I use these coils as is, just follow schematic when wiring?

Thanks in advance......

Electricity doesn't care about wire color.  It does care about wire connectivity.  The color is for the human to make the correct connections.

Those look like the aftermarket replacement coils I got from Partsnmore.
-yellow to one of the blue wires on the coil
-the other will be blue to blue.

Thanks, the po bought these from (see photo).

Please excuse me Jamie, for jumping in on your topic.

What 'bout the coils to spark plugs, will I have to ensure the one that has the yellow is 1 & 4, or 2 & 3, or vice versus with the blue wired coil?

I really appreciate, the help.

I'm really new at this and need alot of help with this bike. I also have a 74 350f, picked up both of these bikes pretty much the same time, good bargins, had to jump on them.
