Side Covers: CB550F Supersport vs. CB550
« on: April 07, 2006, 05:29:22 AM »
Hello,

Is there a difference between the side covers of a cb550 supersport & a regular cb550?
I just bought a 75 cb550 ss and is missing a sidecover and Im trying to find one on ebay but Im being told they are different.
Would anyone happen to have a pic of both?
Ive tried to look at pics of both kinds of bikes on teh internet and cant seem to identify a consistent difference.

Thanks for your help

Cheers

Noel

F sidecovers are more triangular,  K models have a lip toward the front.  Check out my gallery for pics of F sidecovers.

Hey Chris,

Thank you so much.
NOw I see the difference.
Dispite the different shapes, could they be interchangable? (Are the mounting stubs in the same place on the frame?)
COuld I put regular cb550 covers on the cb550f ss?

THanks again

not really.  frames are different, mounting holes in different places. you could bodge something if you're making a rat, but don't wreck a decent cover.....

welcome to the club, btw.  you can just forward any of those K sidecovers you find to me, i'll take care of them....  ;)

Thanks so much guys
Your comments are greatly appreciated!!

One last thing,.... What can I do to make the bike louder?
Would you recommend any type of muffler? I would like to use the stock 4-1 headders but make the bike deafing!!
the louder the better!!

Cheers

zero muffler?  there are many opinions on this site on that subject.  just search "loud" "exhaust" "deaf" "the Man" "egregious disregard"... etc.

jcwhitney has some mufflers/megaphones that might be a start....

Contrary to popular opinion, quiet bikes are more likely to keep your licence intact and loud pipes only piss off the people who you already passed, or wake up, including me
(I work until 11.30/12.00 at night)
Loud doesnt equal fast, fast is fast, loud is annoying.
I dont expect you do any mileage either, its not fun even riding with someone on a loud bike. If you need to be noticed buy an SUV and paint it pink

Only speeding ticket I ever got(so far), in excess 95 in 30 limit, was due to waking up sleeping cop at about 2.00AM.

As for the K covers on an F, yes, they work.  I bought my bike from my cousin, and it is somewhat of a mutt, a '75 CB550F with K forks and K side covers.  I actually think the K covers look better on it,  ;D

maybe it's year-specific, but i have several different K covers, and none of them will work for the  missing right-side on my F. the mounts are positioned differently and the K covers are longer and shaped differently.

Paul's right.  The only K side cover sets that have a hope of working on the F are from the 77-78 models.
I did research this before for this forum.  But, I am too lazy to search for it, now.

I dunno, mine's a mutt, its got the covers with the cutout that say 550 four on them with the emblem.  Not the decal.  I'm still learning everything about my bike.  I did notice that one of the prongs is sanded off, and its held on on that corner by a cable tie, I thought this was done just to get at the battery/carbs easier.  Could be that only 2 prongs match up to where they should be.

wanna get rid of any of those side covers, particularly the left one?

i'll have to double check, but i'm pretty sure the sidecovers from my '77K wouldn't work for the '76 F, hence my own problem. at least one of them had broken pegs though, so maybe that was why i couldn't use them.  i'll also double check if i have any extras, but i'm pretty sure the '77Ks, if i have both, are pretty trashed. the others are from another complete bike, just waiting for restoration. sorry.

what I need, is a right side cover for my '76 F.
