76 cb750 ss (first time build)
« on: March 29, 2011, 07:00:34 PM »
well here goes nada. im new to building bikes but i have built a few performance/custom cars in my time. i bought a 76 cb750 locally for 1k dollars with 11725 miles on the clock and a dyna iii ignition on it with kerker 4-1 full exhaust and pods on the carbs that was put away for 4yrs. the guy said it didnt run and the brakes where frozen but i looked her over and saw plenty of promise in the old girl. first night home i took apart the brakes and polished up the piston and the caliper on the inside new fluid and a proper bleeding,  put it back on and boom....brakes working. next on the agenda was gettin her to start. took the tank off and did the electrolysis method to clean it out, put some fresh fuel and fresh plugs and wouldnt u know it, she started right up in a few kicks.

now on to my concerns due to lack of knowledge on these bikes. not sure if its visible on the pick but the motor has a 2mm shim(at least thats what i think it is) between the case and the cylinder jugs. why is that there? and what is that used for?

another problem im having is that she goes thru plugs like they where matches. they get fouled up in about 5-10 miles of riding. she rides real smooth and good power and then slowly starts to have a rougher idle the longer i ride and starts shuting off/ boggin out in low rpm till finally she's just not ridable. before i start tearing down the carbs for a proper cleaning is there anything i should know or not do before i start?

i have new parts on order and some already here for install like cafe seat, bars, grips, speedo cable, headlight bracket and new tail light. before i get to that stuff i want her runnin right and as reliable as possible. thank you all ahead of time

There is a base gasket that sits between the case and barrels, then another between the barrels and the head.  Two mm sounds thick though.  I'm guessing maybe they overcompensated with the jetting when they changed to that pipe.

Looks like it is running pods instead of the airbox.  Carb jets are very likely the problem.  Maybe the reason it hasn't been running for several years was the PO never got it set up properly.  Pull a carb bowl off and see what size the jets are.  105 main and 40 idle would be stock but  that set up will require something different.  What would be the ideal jetting.....that's the mystery question.  Do a search on pods and jetting as there is a ton of info on that subject.  And then after weeks of frustration you may find yourself searching for a stock airbox. ;)

I think you got a pretty good deal there, looks to be in decent shape and low miles.  I have the same bike though mine is all original.
