molybdenum to reduce stiction
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:26:26 PM »
In his book Hondaman recommends using teflon or moly "in the oils" to reduce stiction. The way its worded it sounds as if it would be in motor oil. Can I add come Slick50 or other molybdenum additive to the fork oil or should I spring for some pure moly (if it can be found)to add in? Stever

have heard only good reports about today's synthetic fork oils that have been formulated to provide smoother action and little/no stiction over the oils recommended "back in the day".  to that end, i have tried motul factory line synthetic fork oil and have found those claims to be true.  very smooth action, really nice.  ordered mine thru my local bike shop, but it's not cheap.  about $17/liter.  oil weight depends on your riding style, weight, bike weight, spring rate.

moly is a grease additive used to provide excellant sliding resistance under heavy/rotational loading; gear couplings, large u-joints, 5th wheel plates, etc.
