I'm getting ready to powder-coat my frame and other parts, I want my top triple and foot pegs to be bare metal, but obviously they will rust/oxidize .Has anyone blasted their stuff and then just cleared them? My frame is going to be a flat black. So I thought the bare metal look would look pretty cool along with it. Or any other Ideas on how to keep the bare metal look?

Thanks

Interested in the answer to this -- especially whether the blasting leaves the metal shiny and smooth enough to come out nice with clear. I'm not planning on powder but Spraymax two-part rattle can clear for a bunch of parts like top and bottom tree, fork lowers and case and valve covers. I just don't know if I have the patience to strip and  polish all that stuff.

I've blasted some parts with my little sandblaster, it doesn't come out shiny. It's a dull gray finish, and is sorta rough to the touch. I like it, but that's the look I'm going for. If It's aluminum you most likely want to go with a softer media like glass bead.

That's the special-second-compressed-part-hidden-in-a-can that a link was floating around a couple months ago?  German company? Please report that and other uses of this product.

I can't imagine even bothering to look under there much other than to scrub it or you were a week before a show or something. Then paint it. That is a harsh place to be on the bike, but the metal there is substantial.

I found an 'industrial' rustoleum latex that I sprayed on my battery box after blasting. The thin metal parts are more suceptible and in need of attention on the 35 YO's I have found in my posession. That said, I have also  been using it for touch up on the  weld backbone of the frame, instructions say apply directly to surface w/o excessive rust removal.  It makes an inky colored black and nice gloss. Can use your finger or a testor's brush  or foam to put it on an requires no blasting away of the good paint that's there.

By the way, I also found some paint that is just a shade lighter than the color of handlebar controls. Anyone got a name for that color once it fades down a shade or two?? Or the original dark control color?

Here is a link to a guy on the Hondatwins.net site that did some zinc plating experiments.  He did a set of foot pegs and they came out great.

I'll definitely report back on the Spraymax once I use it, but first I have to get all these things clean and shiny. Maybe I'll call around to see if anybody does bead or hydro blasting around here.

I bought the Spraymax stuff from this site:

  • What Have I Done?
I had some alloy rims bead blasted and clear powdercoated. I was very happy with the results other than loosing the texture look of the blasted aluminum to the smoothness of the powdercoat.

It definitely loses the "sandblast" look when you powder coat things.   Steel will look like silver paint when it's all said and done.

It would have to be really, really thin to give you the blasted look.    Not saying it will look bad - it will look good as new - just won't keep the appearance
of a freshly blasted part.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I was going to do a bunch of parts sandblasted and clear powder coated, but after I got them blasted, I decided I really didn't like the bare look. Too dull of a grey. Hard to explain it. End result though: much more sanding.
