So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

I have to extend my apologies to everyone on this post...

June of 2006 I discovered my wife was cheating on me

I abruptly stopped posting here and tried to fix the marriage.

none the less it has been a very rocky road.

no more trust, no more mortgage, no more lies...
no more wife, the divorce was final last month.

I still got my bike!

just pulled My 650 out of moth balls and I'm tuning her up.

so now I'm really ready to go have a road trip!

anyone still game?

least you still got your bike jim! She'll never leave, cheat, lie, come home late, or complain when you keep her out all day. But  one thing you can't deny is she will piss you off. When your 40 miles from the house and your points are actin up, yeah she'll piss you off. When your in Deal's Gap, North Carolina, 6 miles in to an 11 mile gap, and your ignition wire burns through the harness, yeah she'll piss you off. And when your in Suchess, Ga, riding through Wolf Pen Gap, and the machine screws come loose on your aftermarket tombstone tail light, and it holds your tag, and at the end of the gap, you get pulled in Dalhonega because you have no tail light, tag, or brake light, and all you have are wires sticking out through your rear fender, yeah, you'll be pissed off then too. But when you fix her up, add a new part, change the oil, and she revs up on the first try, you just would'nt trade her for the world!

I'll send you guys a PM next time I leave Savannah for Concord, NC. I ride through columbia and pineville to the fam's house.

Looks like it's been about 18 months since this thread has seen a post, but I wanted to post in it anyway :)

I am in Near both Greenville and Anderson, SC, and have recently begun working on my first bike, a 1980 Honda CB650.  I've started it a few times over the last year since I got it, but that's about it until this month.  In the last month, I have been working on it almost daily.

Where I started:

The bike has bald tires, a bad battery no turn signals, and the brake lights do not work.  A LOT of smoke coming off the surface of the headers, and a fair bit from the exhaust, itself.  The bike backfires loudly when accelerated.  The brakes are essentially non-functional.  The clutch has about 1 1/2" of freeplay in the handle.  The throttle does not snap back when twisted.  The shocks are weak, and there are some serious wiring issues.  None of the gauge lights work.  No mirrors, and the seat bots are missing.  Seems like a million miles between me and the open road.

What I have fixed:  I rewired the gauges and now i have the lights working properly as far as it's concerned.  The spark plugs have been cleaned and re-gapped (they were all gapped WAY too widely.  The re-wire of the gauges also showed me some unfortunate issues.  Seems like the brown and white wires are all melted.  I have replaced a fair amount of wire thus far.  I have the rear brakes working well, but the front brakes are still weak, although they do stop the bike at low speeds.  The hand brake goes all the way to the accelerator with little resistance now.  Perhaps bleeding???  After the bike ran for several minutes, the smoke from the header surface as well as the exhaust itself has gone away.  The backfiring now only occurs when the bike is cold.  When warmed up, it runs smoothly and strong.

This being my first bike, I have a lot of questions.  I will post in the other forums and try to get this all straight soon.

Hello, Droopy, and thanks for the offer!  I may have to take you up on that at some point.

In the last couple of days, I have been able to get the front brakes working... maybe a little too well, but working none-the-less.  I also have fixed the turn signal flasher.  Thanks to SOHC for that one... who knew it was the gray wire instead of the green?  It's not in the wiring diagram like that.  The right signal flashes fine, but there is nothing from the left.  I am assuming, since the wires all test out ok, that the issue may be in the switch itself.  That's a project for Thursday, as today is dedicated to my kids' assembly at school, and tomorrow is dedicated to the pre-natal doctor and a computer customer who needs my attention....  Soon, the brushes will be replaced, then tires, then a muffler.  After that, I should be just about road-ready... look out summertime!

Here is a pic of the CB650 I've been working on.  It's not much farther now until it's road ready.

It's a rattlecan job done by my 9-year old son and me.
