Split second life change
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:13:56 pm »
I know it does not belong here but since this is where I post most and some of my finest customers come from here, I want to share this.
Today my wife and I experienced the worst feeling a parent can feel, it was 7.13 when the phone rang. A unfamiliair voice asked if I am the father of Bryan because he was involved in a accident. For a brief moment my heart stopped............ My wife saw the expression on my face and imidiately knew it was wrong. Within minutes she collapsed........ All this in a matter of minutes. Felt like my spirit left my body............back to reality, I asked what has happened, the voice responded: "in thick fog, while cleaning his visor, Bryan oversaw a lane divider(?) and was launched with a 280 kgs heavy VF1000F2 and hit the pavement, totally wrecked the bike". Please tell me how is he......... he'll survive, badly broke his leg and with some minor injuries is now lying in hospital waiting for surgery.
Why do I share this? It made me realize, again, how precious your children are and "nothing else matters".

Rob

Oh boy Rob, scary phone call. Here's hoping his leg heals well, I'm sure it will.

My father used to tell me I was like a cat with nine lives. For a while he kept track of how many I had left everytime I brought the bike home in pieces.  ;D When your son is up & about you tell him.  ;)

Sorry to hear about your son's crash Rob. I really hope he will make a full recovery. As a parent I can understand that your heart stopped. Life can change in that split second and that is why I don't encourage my son to ride. He's a natural and I've love to ride with him but I couldn't stand the thought of him getting hurt. There is no easy way out and no definitive yes or no. I ride and race because it is an all consuming passion. If it were less I'm not sure it would be worth the risk.

I can only say, that while I'm sorry your boy was injured, I'm glad he wasn't any worse off. I can't think of anything that scares me more than a middle of the night call concerning children. I've received a couple in my time as well. Now my son works in some of the most unfortunate countries on the planet, and I try not to worry.
I hope your son's leg heals without any residual issues.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery,
Ben

Thanks for your replies, does a lot of good. The reason for sharing is not the accident itself, like been said it could be worse and Bryan is a very healthy, strong young man, so it will heal in time. For me and Tilly time will heal also, but it just put your feet on the ground. We tend to take a lot for granted, and sometimes forget how 'fragile' life is.

Rob.

Sorry to hear about the accident Rob but also glad to hear he is ok. +1 on the "how special your kids are" comment. My son had plastic surgery yesterday on his left lower eye lid, he had a sun cancer removed and is looking a little worse for wear at the moment......

Not good news, but glad to hear he is with us after all.

As I was preparing for my first race this year, I got the news that a good friend of mine, the past editor of a motorcycle magazine, very good rider, lost his life at 56 years old in a road crash.

Just like Mike Hailwood (died in a car) exactly 30 years ago, a car did a U-turn on him as he was passing.

It hit me hard, we tend to forget that it can happen to any of us, no matter how good you are.

And then you climb back on the bike, reminded again how good it feels.

Wish him a quick recovery, in body and soul.

TG

Mooi dat het in ieder geval nog redelijk meevalt voor zover je zo kunt spreken bij een ongeluk.

Your family is very fortunate that its only the broken leg.  I did a similar thing in 1966 and years later began to realize the anguish I had caused for my family. The leg will heal and your son will be a better rider for it. I like my armored riding gear!

Rob,

Glad to hear your young bloke will be ok and i hope his injures heal well and quickly.

Your right.
It does us all good to be reminded how precious all our family and loved ones are to us and how fragile life can be.

Jeez Rob, I dread receiving a phone call like that, glad that Bryan is OK relatively speaking. That feeling you get with your kids is something I couldn't appreciate when other people talked about it and then my little daughter came along and wow you get all these new perspectives on life. Children are so so precious.

Must be the week for it - maybe the better weather in Europe? One of my mates was hit coming home from our workplace on monday night. Broken leg, arm and eye socket and is on 24 hour brain function tests. He's actually pretty OK despite how that sounds. The Ducati 999 is a write off though and he's decided that there's no more biking for him.

Ride safe out there you guys...
