Engine rebuilds
« on: April 10, 2006, 10:35:37 AM »
So my old motor is crying out for a rebuild. I initially planned on doing it myself (with the exception of reboring the cylinders for the first oversize) but now have some doubts. My best bud used to race these things back in the day and he tells me that of all the rebuilds he did, the only one that really worked perfectly was the one Yoshimura did for him. He recomended that I find a decent shop and just show up with an engine and a big wad of cash.

I've always done my own wrenching, and on this bike I've done every thing myself, including unracking the carbs and taking the them and the linkage down to the last nut and bolt. The bike runs beautifully (compression in the high nineties notwithstanding) and I'm pretty confident in my mechanical skills, but the fact that my motorcycle racing mechanical engineer friend was never able to do the job to perfection himself gives me pause.

So how many of you non-professionals have done your own motor? How did it go? Succesful, non-succesful, somewhere in between? And would you recomend it to fellow non-professionals?

If the engine's bugger’d what have you got to loose things can only get better you’ll never know unless you attempt it……..these engines are a piece of cake to put together it’s getting all the old rusty bolts out that’s the hard part get some books and plenty of beer and get stuck in, I’m almost done with my 400 motor and it will run like clockwork  ;D

If Yoshimura were the only people able to build engines nobody else would be in business. Truth be told Yoshimura's roadracing CB's had a bad habit of blowing up. Pay attention to details and find a good motorcycle machine shop....don't "cheap out" and you'll be fine. These engines are very simple.
