Bit of progress...

Got everything nice and lubed. Triple checked everything was good to go and joined the cases back together.





Got the new stainless steel 12 point case bolts torqued down. 18 lbs on the 8mm and 8 lbs on the 6mm.



Turned it over and installed the top bolts and got the HD studs torqued to 8 lbs each.





Overall everything went fairly smooth. Forgot to put thread locker on at first so untorqued, applied, and retorqued. Also, thought I missed a case ping for a second, but didn't. I may be at a mini stopping point right now. Need to get a few of the next pieces ready to go and actually already have some in progress.

Trust me, I trying  to finish him!! The cylinder head is getting bored, honed, and decked at the moment so that can't go on until it comes back. Getting the head prepped to head out to mrieck for a stage 3. That and the carb purchase are the two biggest things holding the progress up right now.

Did you mean that the studs were torqued down to 18?  Or did you really only torque them to 8?

I torqued the studs to 8 lbs. Going off these instructions:

1. Long threaded end must be installed in the case.
2. Note stock stud length location before removing. There are two different stud lengths.
3. After removal of stock studs (removal tool #SP-100 available from APE) thoroughly clean holes with solvent and blow out.
4. Use APE stud installation tool #08-151 or two 8x1.25mm nuts on the noted location, bottoming out, then using a torque wrench torque to 8 ft. lbs. maximum.
5. Install head, and following manufacturer's torque pattern, torque nuts to 20-22 ft. lbs.

The studs only get 8# into the case. The nuts get 18-22# when securing the head.

Those ARP fasteners look nice in contrast to the case charcoal grey (VHT cast iron paint).

Buttoned up a few items yesterday which take me to a current stopping point unfortunately. Need to get some parts out and back before I can make next steps. I really enjoyed this last bit. Putting the engine back together is pretty freaking rewarding after it being apart for so long.

I went through the Vesrah kit and got everything labeled. Got the oil pump, starter, and safety neutral switch installed. Put the 520 front grat on but need to order a new plate.



Got the oil screen and tube installed and put the pan on the case.



Finally, got all the linkage installed and working correctly. Pulled the basket back out to start cleaning it up for eventual Barrett pack in there.

Those 12-points are pretty cool looking.  They seemingly provide for much better grip and reduce the risk of stripped corners, too.

Ya, the stainless adds up quick. I have lost count of the dollar amount I have put into new stainless hardware. If I were starting from scratch again I would do 12 point all the way around, but I already have too much cost into the bike to not use the sockets out of the Z1 kit I have. The ARP bolts are really quite nice. The thread beautifully and the 12 point really does grip nicely. The socket caps aren't as nice from a grip perspective but they are better than the standard 6 point in my opinion.

Well ARP makes hex heads too, Bambu  :-* But they all do add up pretty quickly. When you start comparing an oil pan worth of fasteners versus an entire engine kit for the same money, you have to ask some questions. Me, I ignore those little voices as I attribute them to my wife's incessant nagging about finishing up these bikes so I can build hers! Yadda, yadda, ya, I say to her!  ;)

Glad to know I'm not alone in my obsession with fastners - digging the 12 points too.  Keep up the good work - can't wait to see it on the road.

Maybe Cal parks his nice bikes in the house with a mirror beneath it to enjoy it.
I have heard of several people who collect and rebuild bikes have parked them in the house.
There was a fellow on the C70 Yahoo group that had one of Honda's 90cc DOHC race bikes that he parked in his living room. Guy I know in NY who rebuilds them and has several in the house after being restored.

Not me, Love. They do spend some time in the house during the build (parts organization, some assembly, storage time) but my bikes are built to be ridden, and ride them I do. Okay, I'm guilty of being a bit "thorough" (read a nicer way to say anal retentive) on my details, but no way do I build trailer queens. Besides, my house is so damn small we go outdoors to change our socks we're so tightly jammed up in here.

I do have a large set of shelves in my office consuming an entire wall of new parts for 4 bikes, assembled motors, disassembled and coated motors, and the like.

You are not alone. I have lost count of the number of fasteners that I replaced on this bike. Totally worth it though :)
