'76 550 hub question
« on: March 24, 2011, 02:30:36 PM »
I am in the process of rebuilding the rear hub, and I am wondering if ascertain piece come off or not. The photo below, from top to bottom, shows a shiny hollow cylinder, and then a rubber o-ring/gasket, and then the duller, main part of the hub.

My question:  does this shiny cylinder come off?  It doesn't seem to want to budge, but I would assume that the o-ring can be replaced???

Thanks Frosty.

Would I buy a new o-ring, and just pull it around to replace it.  It looks to be in fine condition, so this may be unnecessary.  But without taking it off and looking at it closer - I wasn't sure of it's role and it's true condition.

Yep, if you want to replace it, the new one will stretch easy enough to go down there. By the look of it though it's doing it's job of keeping dust out of the area where the drive flange moves on the hub for the cush drive to do its job.
Maybe no need to change it at all, just keep high powered solvents away from it if you are going to clean it that way.
