Author Topic: Broke spark advancer shaft. Help please. (Read 4839 times)

Well like the title says, I broke the shaft which the spark advance unit sits on.
The bolt was cross threaded and just snapped off real easily actually.

How do I remove it so I can replace it?
Can I just take a pair of vice grips to the shaft and unscrew it? Or does it (gulp) require splitting the cases?

Pictures when I return from the store.

I would buy a proper stud remover and not take any more chances. That stud (spark advancer shaft) is no longer available, per Motogrid.com (same microfiche as yours,but with the "not available" legend), maybe broken ones soaked up the supply.

There are better design tools for $30, but this one should work. Vice grips will work too, but you put side stresses on it.

DSS has shafts in stock. I just bought one for my K1. I am also interested in the best way to remove one.

That's good to know. Could be NOS never sold or someone may be making reproductions.

As to removing one whether broken or not, I think it important to not put side forces on it. Almost impossible without a tool. This looks like a good puller too, grabs it 360°, then you can use a T handle or such to keep from putting bending forces in:

Always used vice grips meself and never had a problem, dont forget the "O" ring on the shaft where it screws in

Yamiya sells the shaft too . + 1 on vice grips . Sometimes they are pretty tight.

Yep, it's only a threaded shaft and it shouldn't be difficult to get out, just go easy mate, you don't want to break it again and go messing about with easy-outs (the most inaptly named product in the known universe) and crap like that. It wouldn't hurt to spray some WD40 or somesuch to lube the O Ring and maybe the threads beyond, to help get that sucker out. Cheers, Terry.

I'll have honda do a lookup and see if they can find anyone who has one in stock somewhere. Sometimes vendors have them sitting around so they inform honda of their existence, in turn honda puts them in their system. Thats how I got my K7 rocker shafts (Thanks 78cb750cafe!)

Unfortunately I can't use a stud remover (at least not the collet type) to get this out because there are NO threads left on it... well .05 of a thread.

My main concern was having to crack the cases open to try and grip it closer to the base, or something like that.
Worst case I suppose I could weld a nut on the end and try the impact gun? [crossed fingers]

haha yea they were going to be named not-so-easy outs but that just didn't have a nice ring to it.

Yea I'm really concerned with the integrity of this shaft considering how easily the threads broke off so I'll definitely be careful. I wish I could use heat but there's no way I wouldn't wind up melting everything around it so PB blaster it is.

The cheap stud remover with the swinging cam affair doesn't need any threads to grab, in fact better to grab the shaft down low. I've never had it fail on ignition studs or case studs. The other more expensive one I've never used, but I don't think it needs to grab any threads either. But it does grab the shaft up higher at the end.

I've had some bad luck with the swinging type before.
It puts all movement just off center of where you're putting pressure so instead of just turning you're also torquing in a different direction.

Dangerously close to an easy out, I know. Finding the right size may be difficult. The ones in the picture are Irwin Bolt Grips, but Sears has something similar.

If you use an impact wrench, turn it down to its very LOWEST setting.

I bought the set at Sears, and I use it more than the other "you must have this tool to work on old Honda's," the impact driver. I use these to remove just about any frozen bolt/screw, rounded head, broken studs, you name it.

Hammer the appropriate size on the end of a broken shaft, then turn with a wrench. Bang on it with a hammer at the same time to create impact vibration. Pieces I have soaked with PB Blaster, and heated with a butane torch still wouldn't budge, but with this tool they crack loose pretty easy.

I try and spread the good word every opportunity I get. These work GREAT! You NEED this tool!

hey all I got it out with my snap on collet-type stud puller. That tool has paid for itself a million times over in headache avoidance.

Also happened to find a new shaft AND timing advance in this box of hardware I have lying around.
