homemade broomstick bars
« on: April 07, 2006, 10:26:33 AM »
I got tired of the clubmans last weekend and started playing around with a few ideas, and came up with straight bars. before I spent however much money on an actual set of handlebars meant for a motorcycle, I went to home depot and got a 30 inch piece of 1/2" ID steel plumbing. mounted everything up, looked good, took it for a careful test ride and everything worked out good. and the pipe is really thick(which makes up for the extra 3/8") and strong.

so, does anyone see any reason why I couldn't just use these? I don't want to be unsafe, but I think these will work out good

That pipe you used will prob. be stronger than what you end up buying.
As 550 KO put it, the only down side would be weight.

Spray them black and ride !

If you ask me, it's got a pretty hard-core/cool/bad ass biker vibe to it.

It's like it harkens back to the days when there was no Internet/catalog shopping and getting new bars was all about having to know a metal worker!  I mean really, it's a total throw back to what someone would have done back in the day to customize their ride.  If YOU think it's cool then it IS cool.  As long as they are safe..  more power to you!  ;D

Hey, the bikes are "yesterday"(actually, quite a few yesterdays back and there's nothing
wrong with that.) and this is all about a guy (or gal, for that matter) doing what they come up
with, on THEIR bike. Seems like we've gone done this road quite a bit. He's just wanting to be
safe, right? Nothing unsafe about it, so go for it.  8) ;)                      Later on, Bill

actually I was on the road to painting them black, and after I went over them with 600 grit to rough up the surface, they were right where I wanted the to be. I'm going to leave them the way they are for a coupla weeks and see if I want them painted or not

all in all, I'm pretty damn stoked about how this bike is turning out. I'll find somebody with a digi cam soon and get pics. I can't figure out how to freeze frame stuff from my video camera

not a bad idea. I thought about getting a ten foot section  and cutting it all up into bars, but didn't simply because I didn't want the extras laying around

but if anyone is interested, let me know

I have a set of motocross bars on my 79 CB650 right now, but they weren't low enough/forward enough for my liking so today i made some clubman style bars. what is it you didn't like about your clubmans? if there's something i can change i'd like to get it all figure out before i weld them up. thanks.

So they're just a straight length of pipe with no bends at all? Hmmmnnnn................. ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

more or less, I just felt like changing them for a different look, glandaler
but my wrists would get really tired after about thrity minutes of riding, but in defense of the bar-style, this is city riding, lots of clutch and brake pulling

shiftredline:haven't decided if I want to sell them or not. I'll let you know if I do
