Cb550 dual disc question.
« on: April 07, 2006, 04:12:17 PM »

It seems that I'm not understanding how to install dual brakes properly.  :-\

I downloaded the FAQ tip sheet on how it install them.
I collected all the parts.

I'm stuck as to how to install the second disc on the right side of the wheel.
This is the order I have them placed on right now.

Starting from the center:
-hub
-disc
-speedo drive (from a 750k0 - 44641-300-000)
-speedo
-spindle bolt

If this is the correct order, then I'm wondering if i should cut off the tabs on the speedo drive to make it fit flat on the disc.
Or should I cut a small area on the disc to fit the tab on the speedo drive?
If anyone had a picture of an installed dual disc set up - it would help a lot.
Am I missing any pieces?

Thanks.

are the front ends of the 550's much different to the 750?.... cos when i did my duel conversion, the speedo drive fitted inside the second disc, and i think it was an early type drive plate...

http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=2582.0 this is the doco i put together on the conversion... pm me if you need some more help...peace

BTW the head of the long bolts that hold the discs should be on the speedo side, otherwise they will foul the speedo drive.... if you have the drive plate with the tabs... you will need to get them machined off... and a little tab placed on the back to drive it....hope this helps...peace

I helicoiled my hub, countersunk the rotors and used flat head allen bolts. Plenty of clearance.

Bolt the disc(s) on as mentioned with the bolt heads on the speedo side. Inspect the hub/disc hole and you will see you have two "slots" with flat sides against the hub and curved inside the disc carrier.

The late speedo drive has two big "ears" that go under the chrome cover you have discarded, the early one just has two small "ears" turned down from the big diameter that need to fit into the slots.

You can EITHER grind the outside of the small ears into a curve till they fit the slots you have OR with a hacksaw blade cut small amounts out of the disc carrier to make the slots rectangular (after unbolting the disc of course)

As i rarely have access to a grinder i have always gone with the OR and never had a problem

The speedo drive plate was changed in production to try and stop the speedo needle wavering due to inconsistent drive on the two flats and the number superceeded, with Honda at first throwing in a "free" new style chrome cover. Now if you order the old style most dealers will just send out the new one as that is all that is listed
