I was hoping to use a Japanese product made out of rendered down friendly dolphin babies but apparently there aren't too many Japanese that the dolphins of the world consider friendly!
There are about 40 Hectors dolphins swimming around our coastline, apparently they are the worlds rarest dolphins bar none so they should make excellent oil. ;)

I know this is alittle off topic and doesnt help the guys not in the US but  was at the local autozone today and they have $2.00 of a quart of motorcycle oil. They have castrol dino oil(not synthetic) for $3.99 a quart(normal Price) so it becomes $1.99 a quart the best price i have ever paid for motorcycle specific oil. Just a heads up to all, It runs through April 4th I think.

Problem solved, I returned to my local discount autoparts store (Supercheap) this morning and there on the bottom shelf (note to self "look down") was the perfect oil, 20w-50 made by Valvoline. ;D
I knew I had dropped a spanner in the old oil so as I carefully decanted it into a bottle for disposal I was suprised to find a large spring in there too, quick look in my Clymer and mystery solved, it goes in the oil filter housing before the filter...hey it's been a while since I put this bike together and this is her first oil change. ;D

Hush, most places will sell an oil suitable for Diesel engines in the 10w40 range look at those, and the Later Honda's had different clutch material to allow for Synthetic oils, just like the big Yamahas.

Oil names that come to mind are

Shell Rotella
Mobil Delvac
Silkolene Transfleet (Sorry dont know what Fuchs now call it)
Tesco own brand

Castrol GTX Diesel 10w40. GTX was available when these bikes were new. diesel specific oil has more zinc in I was told, something these engines expected when new.

There's actually that spring and a washer that the spring pushes on. Very often it is stuck to the rubber ORing on the filter. The spring should not be pushing on the bare rubber of the filter. Look on your old one or in the pan for the washer.

I see that washer in my Clymer but I don't appear to have one, checked the old filter too.
Guess I'll have to hunt around in my shed till I find one, the bike seems to have been OK without it so far.

Yeah it should be OK without. AS mentioned they stick to the filter and routinely get thrown out with it. Must be thousands of bikes running around without. Just put it on your list. Its a more elegant, more "finished" system with it.

Yup, that washer was the sort of thing I added to my Dave silvers orders in quantities of 5 or more when i was doing many different bikes, you could just about guarantee it was missing if anybody except a dealer(or one in the know) had changed the filter

I'm new here, but I can't believe this oil thread has 2 pages and not one mention of AMSOIL 20w50 Motorcycle oil.  Does it cause problems in these old beasts?  I know in other bikes I've owned and used Rotella, the Amsoil has been a popular synthetic choice due to its additive package.

I just hope mentioning the A-word doesn't get me banned, I'm really just curious!

Thanks for the thread, lol.  Picked up some Mobil Delvac yesterday.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I have not found a 750 yet that has the washer on the oil filter. But that is a good thing...means the PO must have changed it in the past.  ;D

I got tired of fishing around in the oil for mine. I now drain everything over a pan with some old screen covering it.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

We have chips in the US, they just don't look or taste anything like yours.  And, you can't just have one.  And watch the pounds just pile on!

And, I won't eat our chips with fish.  They just don't go together.

I remember the Yanks started to call them 'freedom fries' in protest to the French who - truely using their intelligence - were not willing to invade Iraq for it's 'weapons of mass destruction'.....
I have the feeling lessons are learned now and everybody calls them french fries again...
And no, I will not go in a oil debate...
