Oil filter bolt question
« on: March 26, 2011, 07:34:51 PM »
OK so I used to old stiltson vice grips and a piece of pipe to remove the unmoveable fliter bolt, shoot me. ;D
I'm all good with doing that time and again.
My question is about what is inside the filter bolt, it appears to be some form of spring thing?
I never took too much notice of the bolt last time thinking it was just a hollow fixer for the oil filter cover but I just noticed this internal thingy...what is it?

That is the bypass mechanism that allows oil to keep circulating through the engine when your filter plugs up.

It's a pressure relief bypass valve. When the filter becomes clogged, or when the oil is very cold and thick, the hydraulic pressure of the oil pushes open this valve and lets it bypass the filter so the engine does not completely starve for oil.

These are found in all of the SOHC4 bikes and many others as well.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Yeah but waiting on them annoys the shirt out of me. ;D
Besides my bike is a non perfect example, I like it cos it isn't concourse neat, kinda like how the cops in the early 80's would have been riding them as a tool of their duty, a work horse. :)
My bet Bryan is that if I sprung for a new bolt, next oil change I'd be reaching for the stilsens and my trusty bit of plumbers pipe to turn it off again anyway. ;D

Weld a socket on the end of your bolt.  Then all you have to do is stick a breaker-bar in it to remove.

Yep Kong, that works OK.  I've also welded a large hex nut over the top of the rounded-off original 12mm hex.  It's a simple "plug weld", and when ground smooth and dressed with a file, looks like one of the aftermarket replacements with the large hex.

I've got a very very good STILSON, not sure what you guys would call it but basically an adjustable set of vice grips that tightens as you put pressure on it, to get realy great leverage I slide a 3 foot piece of plumbers pipe over the handle, not much so far has beaten this system. ;D
Even a perfectly rounded bolt will come off this way, my only fear is that a couple of cylinders will twist off the engine as I turn the stilson. :D
In fact I dare Honda to make a rounded oil filter bolt!
