Oette, Bike looks great! Love the color. So bold!
Can you clarify on your 650/550 hybrid...
Did you install the 650 crank and rods inside the 550 cases?
You mention the tensioner, that's the same bolt onto the case style Paulages did?

It is clear that you have transplanted the 650 top end (cylinder/pistons/head/tappet cover, etc.) onto the 550 cases, but just wanting clarification on the internals inside the cases.
I seem to recall the 550 cases had to be modified to fit the cylinder liners from the 650 along with lots of other things Paulages documented in his hybrid motor build.

Also, is it a stock 650 camshaft or did you have a more aggressive cam made or purchased for the bike?

Paulages also did a hybrid that was an Overbore on the 650 to boost the displacement to extreme measures. Did you go this route as well or just a normal overbore on the 650 in the rebuild in standard sizes.

Thanks!

David

Another question Oette on your tach modification. When riding at night, do you have the means to adjust the brightness of the LEDs.
Is it too bright?
Also, does the illumination of the Sigma bike speedo display visible at the edge of the tach or does the case hide them enough to not cause a bright spot that is dazzling.
The little surface mount LEDs can be blindingly bright.

Thank you!

Thanks David,

Yes, it's a whole 650 system including crank and rods. I did not change the displacement since I had to cut the budget (student) so I went with the original pistons, which were in a good condition. When it's time for first overbore there may be some work concerning more displacement.

I am running a CB 550 cam regrind. Not absolutely sure, but it has a increased lift of about 1.6mm and slightly longer duration. Works good so far though I have had no visit at the dyno yet.

In case you want to put a 650 Cylinder on a 550 case, the only thing youll have to do when you use the 650 crank and timing chain is to add 2 slots for the chain tensioner, because its about 16 (?)mm apart from the 550's slot.
Some other changes are required at the ignition side, e.g the advancer pin to use the 550's ignition.

The primary chain tensioner was installed in a nearly equal setup and that is, without serious welding on the case, maybe the only proper solution to mount the tensioner in the 550's case.

Another question Oette on your tach modification. When riding at night, do you have the means to adjust the brightness of the LEDs.

2nd round for you, David,

The speedo is not too bright. Unfortunately all pics at low light intensify the lights of the speedo in the pics. You probably can make the brightness adjustable using an adjustable resistance placed on the outside of the gauge. But since it's perfectly enlighted for my eyes in the dark, I did not make that step.

So far it is not visible and everything is hidden behind the gauge face plate. The SMD LEDs behind the face plate enlight the display in a quite homogenous way.

Excellent video! The roads remind of driving round the Eifel region near Cologne. Quick question what camera did you use for the video and what software to edit the video - very interested in trying this myself. Thanks and again great work I really like what you have done with the bike.

Headlight? I read through your entire build and may have missed it but what are you using for a headlight? Thanks

cheers
