Small Project - Repair and Paint Engine Guards
« on: March 27, 2011, 05:35:56 PM »
Thanks to MyNameIsMudd I have have a pair of engine guards!  :)

Here are a few pictures of the process to strip and sand the rust, JB weld a few holes and get started painting.  I have some welding to do on one of them so it will be painted later.

First, one of them that has been soaked on one end in a diluted Jaso Metal Prep and water solution.  It is available at Lowes and contains Phosphoric Acid.  You can see how much is cleaned off half of it.

Second, more soaking followed by wire brush scrubbing and more soaking.  Repeated a bunch of times, plus sanded with coarse sandpaper and soaked some more...

Next, one of them primed and ready to sand.  Then, after sanding.

This was repeated several times to fill all pits.

Fix All rattle can black has been applied to the first one!

I am hoping that these will provide a place to shift my feet to on longer rides.  I know the paint will scratch easily with boots on them, so I may look for some kind of rubber to wrap around where the boot would rest.

I am pleased with how the first one turned out and am looking forward to finishing up the second one.

Thanks again to forum member Mynameismudd (Derek) !
