Help with Rear wheel removal
« on: March 31, 2011, 08:24:23 PM »
Ok, so I in need of some help. I cannot get my rear axle out of my 75' 550. I can get the nut off just fine. Chain adjusters are loosened up. Brake arms are disconnected.

I can tap the axle about 5 inches but then it just stops cold just as the threads get to the bearing. I cannot coax it out. What am I missing?

Help  ???

I'm new to the CB/SOHC (just bought my first last week) so I could be wrong, but on my Shadow the main thing was to make sure the wheel is still aligned correctly to allow the axle out.  I usually wound up doing a one man balancing act with my foot under the tire and applying a little elbow grease.

there is the chain adjuster and there are 2 on on each side bolts that drop down verticaly in front of the adjusters. remove them, take the cotter pin out of the nut at the end of your axle, take the nut right off slide your axle out, drop the wheel out the bottom.

if it hasnt been off for a long time crud and rust may be hampering it?try knocking it back in,and out,and in and out,,you might gain a little each time?try and get some sort of penetrant on the axle without getting it into the brake area,if you pulling the axle by hand the wheels weight will hamper you,if you knocking it with a hammer it still helps to take that load off it,find an earlier swing arm where the ends arent solid but have removeable end stoppers.

So, giving it some thought I think my issue is that the chain is still on the sprockets. I can slides the whole wheel with the axle rod out the back but the chain is still on.

So that leads me to how you remove the front sprocket? Starter cover and side cover are off and I removed the two bolts from the sprocket but it will not come off. I know I am missing something simple here. Looking through the shop manual now bu haven't found anything just yet.

disconnect the chain master link,it might be a rivetted type that will need a tool.

Bike model and year would help.
Download the manual for your bike in the FAQ section and start reading, then come here if you have any other questions that are not answered by the manual.

Bike is a 1975 CB550K

I have the manuals and have been reading. My issue with them is that when I push the wheel all the way forward (as they say) I cannot pull the chain off the front sprocket. That coupled with the axle rod just stops makes it a little hard.

You will want to pull the chain off the rear sprocket first, you will want to release the axle adjusters until they drop down, then push towards the front of the bike.
I found that getting a big screwdriver or other large rod to bang the axle through with a hammer helps to nudge a sticky axle out.

Success!!!

Couldn't get the axle through still but was able to get the chain off the rear sprocket. From there it was easy.

Thanks for the help and talking it through with me  ;D
