ok, is it me or are there gaskets in there

i did remove a set when i took the bike apart....but it seems to me like there is a second set...

i tried to move them with a screw driver but nothing moved..am i hallucinating???

I would say they are still in there. The copper color in your pic (the exhaust gaskets are copper)? Also, the recess that they sit in only has one step, not two like shown in your picture. Pry away.

Agreed.

It's not all that uncommon to find that the PO of your bike has put a set of gaskets on top of an older set. They get squashed flat and covered with soot, so they blend in with the rest of the exhaust port.

Is it necessary to replace the gaskets if you pull the pipe? I ask because I'm going to be pulling mine and painting soon. It would be nice to have them on hand if they need to be replaced.

Change them every time you take off the pipes. Don't reuse.

Yep. They are cheap and can be had at pretty much any Honda shop.

Cool, I just looked up the part # and called the local Honda shop. I can't believe it but they have them in stock! I don't think they've ever had anything in stock that I needed. I guess I'll ride over there and get them before I pull it off.

Copper doesn't bond to aluminum as a rule but they might be stubborn if they have (likely) been in there for a while. If possible, get under them with a flat small chisel but try not to gouge the aluminum. I don't think you will need heat, just leverage at the joint.

Yup, they're in there. Keep trying with a really thin screw driver. I thought mine wouldnt come out either, but after some time I got em.

I use a heavy sharp pick once you get under one spot it will pop out.

I had to use a 90 degree pick and a jewelers hammer to drive it in, but I finally got the old flattened gaskets out of my head. They were the second set in there. I was worried because I went to put in a new set but the screws holding the spigots in only went in a bit more than a turn and that didn't seem enough for a strong hold. Took everything apart and looked closer and there they were, the older second set of gaskets someone left in. I had to drive that pick in three or four different places on each one to get it to pop out but they all came out eventually.

Replace every time? Really? I have replaced mine once and not with copper but fiber gaskets. I have removed my exhaust a few times since and never had a leak. maybe the later exhausts seal better.

It's one of those things that's recommended, but that you can generally get away without doing every time. I've only replaced the exhaust gaskets on my K1 twice in the past seven years, and I've had the pipes off five or six times.

I've yet to take mine off, so I'm going to get new gaskets before I do it just so I know how new they are.

Skunk I just saw the fiber ones you talked about never used or seen them before may give them a try next time. I allways replace the copper ones don't cost enough to worry about same thing with oil bolt drain crush washers. To each his own.

Cool I just learned something. I changed my oil and didnt see a crush washer, maybe I missed it?

Where can I order another one? I've noticed my kickstand leaves about a dime size spot of oil since changing it. Think thats it?

bollingball: i too would like more info on those fiber exhaust washers

to all the other ones: thanks, you guys where right, all i had to do was pry harder. they hadn't bonded or anything, just stuck real good.

I don't have crush washers on the oil drain screws but flat aluminum washers. I suppose you could call those crush washers but I think of those as having a seam in the center that closes up when you tighten? Those types are definitely one time only use but the aluminum flat washers seem to handle multiple reuse just fine.

Do you know the size on that? I just changed my oil for the first time on the bike. I dont remember seeing any washer or gasket, just the bolt. I am hoping this explains why I have a tiny leak now and didnt before I changed the oil. It is very small, only about a dime size spot collected around my kickstand that I find in the morning.

Anti - you do need a washer there. It is listed as a 12mm washer. That's the ID. Honda pn 94109-12000. You should be able to get a copper drain washer of about the same size at an auto parts place. The same bolt and washer is used at the bottom of the oil tank up on the frame as well.

ive turned the exhaust gaskets over and reused them often,no sweat,if you want use some black NO.4 locktite,then again they are only a few bucks a set,generally when i order stuff i get eight of those aswell,just incase i need them.
