CB350f inner carb throttle slider with rounded screw
« on: March 29, 2011, 07:59:17 PM »
Help! I am in the process of carb rebuilding on my 350f and am trying to get the inner throttle slider apart to get the needle off, well, I have seemed to have rounded out one of the two screws holding the assembly together. Do I have any choice but to buy a replacement slider assembly? I attached a pic of the part I am speaking of. Any tricks or ideas would be much appreciated. I am afraid to just continue using it as is because I am thinking that I may have slightly bent the needle itself in the process of all this...

As always, thanks all!

I know what you're talking about, I had a similar problem. Drilling it out would probably be more hassle than it's worth given the availability of these parts from places like 400fourbits.co.uk or members here.

When pulling my carbs apart, I was fanatical about using the correct screw driver sizes. However with the carbs, I found using a small flat head screw driver gave me a lot better purchase on dodgy screw heads than the phillips heads. So I know it's an obvious suggestion, but go get a small flat head screw driver and try that.

I had the same problem as well and just left it, Rick is probably right with trying to just pick another one up.

The best screwdrivers for working on these old bikes is the T handle type ones. Get them with the phillips head and not a pozi-drive and you'll never look back. Heres an example and you can get them with plastic handles and stuff as well.

I'd take a piece of hard wood and drill a hole into it with a diameter that allows the needle to slide in. Now you've got a base to punch a phillips screw driver in that has a bigger size than the one you used to round the screw off. Setting it with a hammer might give you just enough grip.

It's really interesting that with cross screws, our brain always seems to underestimate the size of the correct driver...

The ones I had recommended for the Japanese carb screws had a triangular top that looked like a paint store church key.
