Need a Recommendation Please...
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:46:02 PM »
My CB750K4 parts bike ignition switch only has 4,700 miles on it. I am looking for a recommendation of a good contact cleaner for it. I tried some zero residue cleaner and it worked good, but after it dried no difference. Contact is still a bit shakey. I have some liquid graphite lock lube, but hesitate to use that as I don't want to gum it up...or is that what I should use? Thanks...

always liked that stuff, but the truth is, without dissassembly and a real cleaning, you'll be chasing gremlins for awhile. It should come apart to the point where you can refurbish the contact plate, and the spinning part that makes/breaks contacts. Some could be loose in there too. If that switch ever saw an excessive draw in its past life, it could have gotten warm and goo'd the plastic the contact sits in.

Deoxit works well on electrical contacts in recording studios, might help with your gremlins.

I picked up the CRC Industrial 2000 Electrical Cleaner and gave the ignition switch a few blasts and moved the switch around. Seems fine now, but I have to let it dry a bit as last time it was later that symptoms showed up again. Tell me this, if the switch performs well should I put a squirt of liquid wrench in there for lube? I would imagine that cleaner removed all the lube if there was indeed some in there to start. I also have some graphited lock ease fluid?

The switch is a simple spring and plunger but can be a bastard to get back together.
I don't think any magical spray will help you with the operation of this switch.
It either works or it doesn't and repair requires a rebuild of the parts.
I got a replacement spring, plunger and button from partsnmore but the brass plunger wound up being long, had to spend a few minutes sanding the post down to where it would fit. The wire also came loose from the mechanism and I had to solder the wire back in place on the bike- not fun at all.
I works when I press it now though.
