The sweet, sweet sound of a running bike....
« on: March 30, 2011, 08:46:45 AM »
...especially when you haven't heard it run for a long time!

I bought my wife a bike for our anniversary last year, which she was super excited about. It's a '75 cb400f that I last heard run probably the day that I got it home (end of July). I parked it in the corner, and the plan was that we'd tear the bike down and restore it together...bike was modded a bit, probably back in the late 70s or 80s, and missing a couple parts, so it's not safe to ride now...

Anyway, since the temps have finally gotten to above freezing here, I went out to the garage yesterday, replaced the burnt out 15A fuse, put some new gas in the tank, put a charged battery on, and to my surprise it fired up almost immediately, while kickstarting it no less! Before we started to tear it down, I wanted to make sure it still ran okay, and had good compression, and now after hearing it run, I almost don't want to tear it down!

my thought as well.Ride it.tune it up and ride it,that is the best thing for these old bikes, just to be ridden.
its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

I have heard the best tune up for these SOHC's is to ride 'em...  ;D
Tons of bugs will work themselves out with some miles.
Make it safe, then go for it!

How about some pics???

I agree, if its running good just tune it up, fix the safety issues and get her riding it!  Get her used to the bike, make changes that are necessary for safety and comfort, pretty it up later.  Let her get over her first half dozen bike drops before you do allot of that kind of restoring.  After all riding season is almost here, already is for me as far as I'm concerned!  And yeh, where's the pics!;D

Here is a pic of all my babies...

Obviously, the 400f is the near one...it's missing some stuff, wiring is sketchy...but It was titled, and I got it for a what I consider a steal...the boss maroon 750K in the back is torn down completely now, and that'll be my slow, ongoing project for myself...the 78 550k in the middle is my riding bike for the time being  ;D
