Televisions - LCD, OLCD, LED etc etc
« on: March 31, 2011, 02:11:51 PM »
HI All Experts,

is it just my imagination or all of the new TV 's being sold out there have very short shelf lives?

We looked at several and the selection is varied both in size & price, BUT
they also are NOT wired for my current set up (5 channel surround sound, Yamaha HTR-5930).
SO this begs the question: will I also have to buy a new surround sound system, over & over again
every time the manufactuerurs change the sound hookups or go from one new thing to another.

Lots easier to just unhook it and throw all that crap out and just ride the bikes.  ::)

peace,
michel

Michel,

To help you with your problem, I need to know how you intended to wire your sound system to a new TV? Did you intend to drive the sound system with the TVs audio output?

Most new systems require a HD source from either a satellite receiver, a DVD or Bluray, or a HD cable converter. Then this source provides the audio that is processed by your sound system as well as a separate HDMI (High Definition Monitor Interface) signal to drive your HD television. Most TVs now are nothing more than an expensive monitor and seldom is the turner built into the TV used...

Meh, as long as you have a DAC with a Toslink input you can use it for 2 channel stereo like I do or if your DAC is a 5 channel dolby or whatever it will still work.

If all you have is an analog input on your receiver you are kinda screwed until you get a DAC.

The basic answer is yes, they expect you to shell out $$$$ to buy a new sound system when you buy that new TV.

These idiots think money grows on plastic credit card trees.  ::)

It pisses me off that they don't put special features on DVD's anymore, they want you to shell out more $$$ for a bluray player that will be obsolete in less than five years so you can get back the special features. #$%* 'em, I won't play their silly reindeer games.  >:(

Michel,

If you use the TV as a monitor only, then the audio outputs shouldn't be an issue because the audio is going straight from the source (cable box, dvd player, etc) to the stereo.  At least that's how I've always  hooked up my systems.

You can find some sort of connector to make anything work these day. I mean, I've played a regular old NES on an LCD TV. If you can do that, you can do anything!

Well, we'll see as all the tv's do not come with cables.
The 5 channel surround sound system I have must have a way to hook up to the newer tv's.

Is this what the back of your receiver looks like?

You don't have to run the TV through the receiver.  In fact you'll get higher quality video if you don't, since it's not an hdmi receiver.  You can connect the video output of your devices directly to the TV, and the audio output of the devices to the receiver.

If you want the ease of not having to select the appropriate input on the receiver and TV to watch video from different devices, then yes, you'll most likely need to get a new receiver that has hdmi input/output.

Are most TV's now not being made with a component video input option?

That model has toslink input jacks in the lower left hand corner.

I think he just wants to run the audio through his receiver, if he has a model as recent as the one you are showing that should not be a problem.

That RCA marked "Digital Input" will also carry the surround signal.  It would help to know what the media source(cable, satellite, Fios...) is.

I have Dish network, too, and my stereo is very similar to yours.  I run a digital optical line from the dish box to the stereo for the audio (inexpensive cable and full digital surround sound), and an hdmi cable to the TV for the video.

But if you run over the air antenna TV like I do that hook up will not feed it through the stereo.
Let the TV pass all the audio to the stereo (for me the easiest way was to hook a toslink cable from the TV to my DAC- I am only running stereo sound).

Like Stan said you can also run an RCA digital input probably from the TV- depends on how you want to run it.

Gordon's method will not put antenna sound from the TV to the stereo but it will work for Dish and other inputs wired to the receiver.

Wasn't even considering an antenna hook-up, since I haven't used one in over ten years.  But that is something you need to think about if you still have a need for one.

Over-the-airwaves antennae gives a full digital signal. The signal coming from Dish etc is compressed so as not to use up all their band width. Over-the-air is better quality but only if you can actually see a difference with your equipment.

Picture quality is definitely better over antenna, sound- I have not noticed much of a difference between the two.

What is an antenna?

Let me guess.  I'd have to explain what "records" were.

I had an antenna hooked up to my TV when Cablevision had a piss-fit with Fox5.  The high-def came in great.

Y'all  will love this one.  My son works at Pizza Hut.  On Super Bowl Sunday, someone brought in an analog TV w/ rabbit ears.  My son had to break it to 'em that it wasn't going to work since the migration to digital.

Hilarious.

Hey old dude, remember all those commercials and the statements plastered all over the radio and TV saying you would need a digital converter box?

Looks like you really were not paying attention in class.  ;)

Actually, it was some young chick.  I am painfully aware of the issue, as I had to explain it to all the 80somethings at the home where my Mom lives EVERY FIVE &*^%ING MINUTES!!!!  And this was my life when my Mom just had to have cable;
