A Soldier Died Today.
« on: March 27, 2011, 02:06:01 AM »
Plans are to bury my dad on Friday. I had to call EMT's a couple days after a trip to Chicago  planned .

We've been joined at the hip for about better of seven years now. Held his hand throuth his last hours, til the end.

Gotta have a break from the people I share a will with, so I'm going to do what I had planned before any of the other stuff.

Leaving for AHRMA RACES in DFW in a couple hours as planned in FEb.

A SOLDIER DIED TODAY
by A. Lawrence Vaincourt *

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past,
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.

And tho’ sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we’ll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer, for a soldier died today.

He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won’t note his passing, though a soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life?

A politician’s stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and, perhaps, a pension small.

It’s so easy to forget them for it was so long ago
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever-shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier’s part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor while he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,

“OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY”

The best part is that you've been joined at the hip.  I wish I could say that about my dad and me.  I'll do everything I can to hang with my kids as I get old (if they'll have me).  Condolences.

Good luck man and be careful. The tears will hit at the strangest times. I never had a real dad, but the man that was closest to being one for me passed away last week. He taught me to work on bikes and be self reliant. I miss our morning coffee and telling of bad jokes.
Keep strong and keep his memory close to your heart.

May your Dad R.I.P. It is great to hear you had a tight relationship with him.
Wish mine was that way.
After Mum died some 40 years ago and he took up with another women (the quintesentual ugly step mother) it all turned sour.
Bless you brother, stay strong.

Lost my Dad 8 years ago, still miss him and his easy going nature, also a soldier WW2.
Neat poem, never heard it before but very very true.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

So it is. Friday April 2, 2011 we planted him in the ground. Friends relatives and co-workers gathered, remembered and mourned.  Had a good spread of food of sea creatures eligible for consumption by Catholics from Chicago on a lent period Friday. We planned it that way.  Many  friends  old and new came to be by our sides, to celebrate his time on earth and reminisce about good times and good deeds of a good man.

Damn, just weeks short of an 85th birthday.

Travel was still in the plans when his illness crept up.

Yep. I wore a tie for the whole day, time to take it off. Couldn't have done it if it wasn't subtle and paisley patterned.

Wish they'd have buried him in the casual clothes myself.

His 12th armored division asked for a bit extra on his obituary, maybe some of you can appreciate this stuff, too...

Hello John!

What a marvelous story! That was Jack all over. Perfect for an armored infantryman B]17

On Apr 2, 2011, at 1:25 PM, John Priestley wrote:

Dear Bill,

If there is any chance to edit the next Hellcat News, or post if there are some anecdotal events or of Jack's stories of growing up in Chicago and rural Indianna include this. Valparaiso is where his parents had a cottage built by aunts and uncles near Flint Lake in Northwest Indianna. As a child he grew up there with his brothers and sisters during the summers.  In his youth he would on occasion bicycle the distance between the two places.

Dad drove an Ice Cream Truck as a youngster, not sure which age or order of the occupations were, but he had stories about being out on the runningboards of the truck during an ice storm waving at cars to back off as he slid down the hill  towards Longwood Drive backwards.  He also told stories of a cunning  way to make sure his delivery of frozen goods would be the store owner's first priority when he arrives!

He also pointed out some of a part of Chicago where he worked at a modular home neighborhood. Perhaps this is where he got his labor union story of paying a business agent  so he could have  limitless  union employment.  After a couple half days of union work, Jack was an unemployed member. When he had found work by himself, the union business agent showed at one of his jobsites to check for cardholders. Jack burst out with "Your're that &^% * that stole my $5" (a fair bit of change in the '40's),  and started making his way towards the flim-flam man.  The Business Agent quickly made retreat back to his car and left the site.

Jack Graduated from the University  of Chicago with an engineeering degree after his time with the 12th Armred Division. He worked with Maul Tool, Electromotive, Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita KS, and  eventually retired with the post office in 1989 in Norman OK, where he had worked since 1970 or so.

He was preceded in death by his wife Audrey who attended several 12th armored reunions up until her death in 1997. Jack  traveled extensively   for weeks at a time'  but when in Norman daily visits for prayer at Audrey's  final resting place was  routine.

Sorry I am having trouble attaching photos for some reason.

Sincerely~
John Jr.

Hi John

I know things are a bit hectic for you right now and I apologize for this request. I will be writing the next article tomorrow or Wed. and would like to put in a piece about your dad.  Would it be possible to E-Mail me something.  Things like early life, service time, work after service  hobbies, and family are the bit the readers like to know.    If you would send an obituary to John Critzas, (the E-mail address is in the front of each Hellcat news) he would be sure to get it in the next issue.

Again we are so sorry to lose our buddy and good friend.

Our best to you in this difficult time.
