CB400f clutch help
« on: March 30, 2011, 04:36:38 PM »
After the winter, I started the bike and the clutch was locked. I tried to free it, but failed.. so I took the cover off.

The prevoius owner put in 6 aftermarket friction discs, 1 stock looking friction disc and 6 steel discs. The aftermarket ones are about half the thickness of the stock looking disc.

So my question is - how many frictions and how many steel discs? (I thought it was 6 friction/ 5 steel.)

Anyone ever use this clutch? (scroll down a bit)

Probably a Barnett clutch, infamous for locking up when sitting (even overnight). I can count a stock clutch here if nobody else has the info for you, but not today.

Thanks. I don't think they are barnett, they look like junk.. This may also account for the high pitched whine it maded taking off in first gear from a stop. I have another 400, but can't remember how many it had when I put it back together.. ::)

There are 6 friction discs and several differet metal plates with differet part numbers so they aren't the same.

There was some discussion a month or so ago about varying numbers of disks in clutch baskets.  Might turn up if you searched, I can't recall exactly what was in the thread off top of my head...
