Is that a MAC 4->1 I see on there?  You still need to rejet.  Even though it feels/runs good, it is running much hotter than it should be.  Get an infra red thermometer and check the cylinder head temps after a nice hard run.

If it is running too hot (probably), then look at the threads in my signature.

The solution for 77-78K with pods and a Mac 4->1 is 105 mains, needles in stock position.

Quit throwing things into the air and this won't happen.

Glad I saw this. I have a 750 78K PD42B stock air box 2 into two with baffles. pipes are from PO don't know brand but I like them and the sound. I have my carbs on the bench now and see they have 110 main and 35 slow. I took them off too pull the slow jets because I went by the book the first time which says they are not removable. Question is are the 105 smaller than the 110 I not sure how the number system works. Plug chop says it is rich at WOT. Do anyone think I should go to the 105?

I had the moment some time back when working on my chopper.  I was so much happier when I put an airbox back on.  I will never throw away another airbox.  Airbox forever!!

best thing I ever did for my bike was buy fresh airbox rubbers and put the original 4-4's on it.much better.Pods only look cooler.
its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

105 is smaller than 110,its 1.05  millimetre or 1.10 millimetre etc.,a 38 slow jet is .38 of a millimetre.

I would not trust a "plug chop" to give me any useful information when looking to change jets.  I think they are an utter waste of time, and I've been reading plugs for half a century.  Plugs can give you good indications of the overall system but not with a single blast and chop - that just adolescent crap.  Drive the bike for 100 miles or go run it on the track for a few laps and then you might get some useful information from the reading.  But for real tuing  if you want to know what your fuel system is doing put the bike on a dyno with an exhaust gas analyzer and then you can tell what's happening, but blasting up the road and hitting the kill switch then studiously examining the plugs isn't good for much other than impressing the local teenage boys.  Complete waste of time.

not everyone has access to a dyno... so wouldnt a plug chop do some good to show you if you are lean or too rich? obviously not after a quick run around the block but after a good ride?

Dave: 500 Thanks I thought that was the way the numbers went but was not 100%

Kong: The The Dyno run would cost more than I paid for the bike :) Any cheaper way to tell? Plus I don't think there is one with in a 100 miles. I live close to Mayberry and work out of Wally &Goobers garage ;D

Based on my experience, I definitely agree with Kong on this.  Plug chops all looked the same with my Dyna coils and ignition anyway.  Didn't make any difference whether I had 114s (way too rich) or 98s (too lean).

Oh, don't get me wrong, you can definitely read plugs and get useful information from them.  Its just that any deposits that you can actually see and make any sense out of take a little time to build up.  Reading plugs gives you broad information, not pinpoint accuracy for  a short lived event.

I've gotta agree that dyno runs are expensive.  My Harley has a Dynojet tuner in it and I had a coupon for  MAPing for the bike.  They came to a close-by town for a week-long annual bike rally they have there (Mountainfest; Morgantown, WV; late July) and I had it done while there on their traveling dyno.  Otherwise I believe the local Harley shop gets $300 to do the same on their dyno.   It is nerve-wracking to be there while its being done.  They run the living dog-$#!T out of it until it just about makes you want to scream STOP!  I couldn't even stand to be there while they were doing other guy's bikes.
