a little help with purchasing a dyna set
« on: April 01, 2011, 10:21:18 AM »
im looking into getting coils and ignition from Dyna for my 750 k6. im a little confused with the coils. i understand that i would replace the factory coils with 5 ohms. if im getting the electronic ignition then i can go with the 3 ohms.. am i right? just a little question i want to make sure before spending the dyna prices

thanks in advance

As long as your bike is basically stock and the charging system is up to snuff it should work just fine for you with the 3-Ohm coils.  But if you've added things that give additional electrical draw, things like HID headlights, grip or glove heaters, passenger intercom systems or other sound systems, additional lights - anything of that sort, then you would be better off going with higher resistance coils (5-Ohm) because they will reduce the power-demand of the ignition system, leaving power for your other requirements.

Just a point of interest. Halogen lights pull more wattage. HID lights pull less.

Look up Dyna's website and give their tech line a call.  I've found that with the CB400F some members here recommend the 3ohm and a few the 5ohm...Dyna was quite helpful and gave me the lowdown.  5ohm is the way to go to avoid over taxing your charging system.  The performance difference is NEGLIGIBLE.

Off topic....sorry, but OWNED, I just GOTTA see that bike up close some day, I think I'm in love   :P.  Maybe when we get that way with the world relay in the next month or so?

If you stick with points for a while the points will wear out faster due to higher current loads across the points with 3 ohm coils . If you think you might stick with points use 5 ohm coils .

The suppression core usually has a non-conductive core that's carbon-impregnated. Sometimes, they use a coil of very fine wire wrapped around the core. The original idea was to suppress electrical interference that can screw with AM radio reception. These days, the suppression is to prevent interference with the vehicle's computer. Our bikes used leads with stranded metal cores, because they're more durable. The suppression is accomplished with 5,000 ohm resistors in the plug caps.

Nope, no need for you to suppress anything other than as a courtesy to the poor slob next to you at a traffic signal in his fully computerized Lexus.  Him you could hurt, but you're bike is as safe as a dinosaur from minor pulsed electromagnetic emanations.  When I bought mine it was (Dyna) copper wires from coil to plug for me and let the rest of the world struggle through as it may..

Z1's price is a deal, AND Jeff provides great service.  Why buy from a stranger?
