First commercial video project
« on: April 01, 2011, 09:25:00 PM »
This is my first commercial job since graduating in December. The video is about about coffee but there is a bicycle in it so its kinda relevent, right? Anyways, this is what I do when im not hopelessly trying to repair my motorcycle. If you have a spare 3 min, please let me know what you think, and more importantly if you know anyone that needs videography or photography work done, lemme know! (shameless plug, but if i dont find more work i cant work on my bike, right?)

 Thanks!

You do good work! I checked out your others too. Hope you're successful. Congratulations on graduation.

Very nice work. I can tell you put a lot of work into it.

I dabble in videography too, but just to pay for my hobbies. I shoot with a VX200 and edit with Premier. The gigs have paid for my camera and more.

What do you film and edit with?

Some day I'm gonna get me a EX1, someday....

Thanks for the compliments!

Noahspop- I shoot with a canon 5d mark2 and edit with final cut pro. My background is in still photography (photojournalism) so the DSLR is perfect for my needs. Plus the video quality is gorgeous.

Very nicely done, I think. Always wanted to try my hand at roasting, in the meantime, your vid convinced me to try a bag of yours. Check your orders.  ;)

Well done! The only video work I've ever done was skateboard video. I may have to try that coffee sometime too. ;D

I starting filming skateboarding too. Its fun having two filmers filming one person skate.
Next thing I know friends and family started asking me to film stuff. I enjoy the whole process.

Not too shabby at all.  As far as the shameless plug, you go.  I don't need the services, as A. I don't need video work as a house-husband(haven't worked in 6+ years) and B. my daughter graduated from SCAD in 2003.  Where did you graduate from?

Wow, didn't think that posting it here would generate sales, but AWESOME! I did the video for a friend as I am trying to create work to build a stronger portfolio, and he is trying to expand his business so it worked out quite well.

I grew up watching a lot of skating videos too. Seems like I did more watching than actual skating.

333- SCAD, that's a great school from what I hear. I graduated from Western Kentucky University. Bowling Green, Ky wasn't my first choices of places to live ( no offense fellow BG'ers) but that have a great Photojournalism program.

As far as the coffee goes, IMHO he does roast the best i've tasted, and i'm kind of a B!@ch about my coffee. I like the Papua New Guinea in the french press. Damn its good.

Thanks for all the compliments guys!

Nice one. I know Austin has a blooming film industry. I know several people that got in a couple years ago and are doing great. So move to Austin, then do great, then give me a job.

Mekagojira

Glad you liked it. I've had a lot of different coffees, but its my favorite too. I had a pour over for the first time at his shop and damn was it amazing. Truly the "perfect" cup of coffee. I'm saving up for my pour over supplies now.

rklystron-

Thanks! My degree is in photojournalism (mostly still photography) and through that I have really fallen in love with video, but I have no real frame of reference as to what is considered "good" in the film industry. So again, thanks!

tramp,

That is definitely a good thing. yes I shot it with the canon 5d mark2.

Thanks guys!

5D MKII is a great camera. I especially like what you can achieve with depth of field. The bad thing about that camera is the audio circuit. We always record audio on another device. Again good video.

Yeah, I have looked at getting a beachtec adapter to fix that. For all of my interviews I record everything to my Marantz. Not being able to listen to the audio while recording is a BIG downfall. So far I've been doing everything by myself so having to record audio separately while recording video is near impossible. Hopefully on my next job I can hire an audio person.

There's lots I really like about the video and the subject is credible and interesting.  I love your control of depth of field and focus.  Your framing is very natural.  You do interesting "perspectives" (angles I guess).  I'd say that the signature of the video and possibly the signature of your style is about depth of field and focus.  I recently got a 35mm f1.8 lens and I'm having a hard time staying away from the large apertures for the purpose of limiting depth of field.  It makes for excellent emphasis on the subject and "warms" the feel.

The quality of the video really does look great.  Did you use a sled for the scene where folks are smelling the coffee?  Did you use camera stabilizers in this shoot?  I'm so tempted to build my own (rube goldberg variety).  DSLRs are especially difficult to keep smooth.

I have a Nikon D7000 and I like the quality of it as you do the Canon but your Canon is full frame... sweet.  The Nikon's audio is substandard and auto focus is either horrible or I haven't mastered it yet - I'm tempted to go mostly manual as you did in at least parts of your vid.  Thankfully, there are alternatives to indigenous mics that plug in and shoe mount.  I'll probably never get to the point where I do separate audio....

Excellent Video!

GammaFlat, Nice post. It appears as though you have some great experience shooting with DSLR's. The best way to get good at a craft like building motorcycles or shooting is to do it. Like the saying goes, " You meet the nicest people on a Honda." Glad I am here!
