The "Made In Japan" label started out as a joke, but it didn't stay that way for long.

I agree. MIJ used to mean cheap crap, but I don't think many can argue with their production and quality now. China will do and is doing the same.

China also will be developing a middle class with a population eventually larger than the entire US, and we should expect them to consume much like the west.

It is all Perception for me, HF tools I treat as disposable, craftsman as keepers, simple, right? who knows. I bought a honda in 70's because I had enough money to. They (bike) have proven to be reliable if cared for over the years but anything could be, if cared for.

I disagree, China is not doing the same in regards to motor vehicles.

Exactly.  With a caveat.  If the process continues to the point where the Chinese have no real competition, the motivation to improve will be gone.

It's a world market whether you like it or not.  We have to compete with countries that don't have anywhere near the same standard of living that we have become accustomed to over the past several decades.  We don't have a god-given right to maintain our same resource-sucking lifestyle we've somehow managed to achieve.

We're entering a time where there will be an overall leveling of economies and standards of living.  Americans and Western Europeans are at the Zenith, so we're destined to fall to a certain extent.  The Chinese are near the bottom of this scale, but they also have the largest population, and they're becoming industrialized, so what they want is what dictates what the rest of the world gets.

As far as being loyal to our own home grown manufacturing base goes, well, we're all hypocrites, aren't we? Our homes are full of imported stuff, and we all love a bargain, so we buy what we buy.

I've got two Korean cars, an American SUV and an Australian manufactured (but American owned) car in my driveway, one English bike and 3 Japanese bikes, a Chinese lathe, a Taiwanese mill, an Italian MIG, a Malaysian TIG, and so it goes on. My place is like a UN of mechanical objects.

I bought a little Chinese gas powered hedge trimmer from my local "Aldi" (German supermarket chain) store on Thursday for $149.00. It looks quite well made and fired right up, and trimmed my hedges easily.  I could have bought a Stihl hedge trimmer (made in Germany) for around 600 bucks, and I've no doubt the Stihl product would be a better quality product, but I'd rather spend the remaining 450 bucks on other stuff, like bike parts and fine American whisky.

Over here, a well known Australian Entrepreneur, Dick Smith, started a "Buy Australian" campaign, trying to shame us all into buying Aussie products over imports. I always thought this was a little ironic, seeing that Dick Smith made his fortune importing cheap electronic goods from Asia.

Sure, the manufacturing industry here is in decline, but we're making money hand over fist selling the raw materials to China, so I guess it all goes around. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Steve-o, so what if it is not a chinese company or designed there. If it is still made there, it is chinese. A lot of the chinese products you have were not designed in china but here in the US by US owned companies and then made in china. You want a GOOD example? Apple computers. They make sure to tell designed in california but they are all made in china.

Yep, my Ipod was made in China, Apple actually mention it in the handbook, something like "Designed in America, made in China", or words to that effect. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Last week I went to the Auction of the local Ducati, Benelli, BMW Husky dealer.
It was run by Maynards, one of the oldest  houses in America.
I hung around scrounging, picking up my meager purchase, finding a radial master cylinder, in a corner ..as I am wont to doing.. and of course.. chatting up the Auctioneer.

He told me he worked in Detroit a lot the last decade. He told me of buying 20 large punch presses for a few million, when the economy tanked hard..and auctioning them 6 months later ..and they didnt sell.. and went to scrap.

He told me of the 11 GM plants they bought outright, that they are still selling off.
But what struck me mostly was that he said most of the big stuff was going to Korea and China..

So enjoy your cheap buying, but dont expect it to last forever. One day the tables will turn, the prices will start to go up, and we will be SCREWED.. as we will have a lot less resources to compete against what many of us helped to fund.

What price do you put on selling off your future?
 Are you really saving?

I went to an auction at a ford plant in Oklahoma City 5 or 8 years ago.Was looking at machines with a friend.  Auction frenzy can make things like that high.  Came home with a lot of arbor presses, There were a bunch of those. And the air tool lots, well who really needs 50 air wrenches in questionable condition at one time?

Sad to see a production line end, It was a parts manufacture and rebuild  place , not whole cars.

I have a bunch of stuff from there.  Paint gun, air compressor, socket adapters, c clamps, etc.  The only things that have been total duds have been a rotary tool and a shallow well pump.  They opened a Tractor Supply Co right across the street from it too.  And there's a Chinese buffet right in the middle of them!  BONUS!  Not top quality but a lot of the stuff is satisfactory for the average wrencher like me...

I bought the rotory tool to do one job, a furniture repair with hardly any other tools.
It was incredibly cheap on a monthly sale (14.99?)  and worked as It was needed. Haven't used it much since, but for cleaning small touch ups or small sanding or cleaning up dowell holes it seemed worth what I paid.

I still can't figure out what the title of this thread means... Is it questioning the existence of HF? Wait, maybe it's a trick question. FALSE! It's spelled Harbor freight!
