Stain in float chamber. Should I be concerned?
« on: April 01, 2011, 11:32:06 AM »
When cleaning my carbs the other day I discovered a light brown residue in the float chamber of my no. 3 carb.  It looked to be only below the fuel level line.  It scrubbed off of the metal and brass but not the foam float itself. What is this from, and is it cause for concern? Thanks (:

Don't think its much to be concerned about.  I've found it to be quite common after fuel has sat for a bit in the carb bowls.  It probably is from some deposits that accumulate without really causing any problem, unless the fuel has sat for a number of years and starts to turn to varnish.  Then you might find it blocking small outlets in jets, etc.

Ok.  Figured it wasn't anything too bad I just thought it was strange that the others were fairly clean and that particular one had the funny residue.

If the bike is running well there is no reason for concern. Gas that has formed varnish can look like a coffee stain. As mentioned it could mean you have some buildup in the passages, so you may want to add some good quality cleaner to your gas for a while.

Yah that's exactly what it looks like - a slimey coffee stain haha.  Thanks for the tip!

if the float is still out,try soaking it in vinegar, you might have to weigh it down, the stain wont hurt as long as its not a flaky/lumpy sort of one, mildly abrasive household cleaners are also good at scrubbing this type of stuff away.
