I had to fill my Energizer AGM battery on my Yamaha, then install sealing plugs.  However, the AGM for my GoldWing, I just bought from www.ETX18L.com, was shipped filled, sealed and charged.

They were both AGM batteries.

It is easy to see how there would be confusion.  There is a WHOLE LOT OF CONFUSION around battery technologies, I've seen.  People often incorrectly call AGM batteries "gel".  That is most certainly not accurate.

It also says "sealed lead acid" on the box, or SLA.  SLA and AGM are not the same thing.  I think whoever makes the batteries for sears may be trying to confuse people even further.

I've been using the optima agm sealed batterys in my race car. After they get some age they do not recover well from a full discharge. Even new if they are completely dead you have to jump them to another battery to get a modern charger to start charging them. Many get tossed because they won't take a charge when all they need is a jump.
The one that came in the car was at least 11 years old. There was no date but it was in the car when I bought it, the owner before me didn't buy it and the owner before him didn't think he did because he was an interstate dealer and would have used one of his own. It was mounted to the rear axle of a hardtail dragster for at least 7 years, then in the enclesed trailer, then in my street rod. I finally killed it when the key got left on.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Don

At that age, it is likely "gone". Leaving it on tookl it all the way down. Even then, that's getting the good from a battery. 'Never had a "conventional" battery last anywhere near that long.

However, I read somewhere it takes a high amp charger to charge a really depleated AGM. Two-Tired will know. Seems like it was  14 or 16 amps (from very poor memory).

I've heard  that 'flashing' an AGM CAR battery with about 20~50 amps and a higher voltage (30~50v) will 'jump start' it and allow it to charge?
I've never tried it, I've been in close proximity to an exploding battery and don't want to get close to another one  :o

'Don't know about "flashing".

It seems that vented batteries like to explode if very low on liquid (gives lots of room for fumes) and you attempt to charge 'em or "jump start" 'em with another battery. Seen it done from about 30 feet away. Dangerous and kinda messy!

That's just because Hydrogen loves a spark! I ALWAYS connect the jumpers to both terminals of the dead battery first!

Gonzowerke: No need to spend that kind of money for the charger. What brand and model are you talking about I would like to read about it. It most be a temperature compensating 4 or 5 stage. Take a look at these

http://www.compacc.com/p/Yuasa-Smart-Shot-12V-1-5-Amp-Battery-Charger
It is my understanding the larger the battery the longer it will take to charge it but it will charge it.
And read this about chargers  http://www.batterystuff.com/tutorial_chargers.html

Better yet on price http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=282952&store=&catId=&productId=p282952&leafCatId=&mmyId=

Thanks for the links, Bollingball! I don't know who makes it, but it has the all-important BMW roundel on it, hence the price!

http://www.sierrabmwonline.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=934

And here's what they want for a 12AH AGM Exide!

It lists charging rates on it though, Standard charge is 1.4 amps for 5-10 hrs, or quick charge at 3 amps for 2 hours.

Gonz. Looks like that BMW charger is for people who don't where the battery is  ;) if it is that hard to get to I would be running some leads out for another charger.

I would measure that battery and get a Yuasa or Scorpion
