2nd CB first project 72 Cb750
« on: April 02, 2011, 10:59:29 PM »
Noob here. Just brought this home yesterday with it wearing the whites...I took them off today. Stripped the rear shock mount Nut and bolt and uncovered some fantastic wiring. The headlight bezel in the fairing didn't match the original bucket so i will have to source one of those.  My wife doesn't like how my "cheaper transportation"  has a list of things needed that keeps growing. ;)

The white seat has to go.

Well after some research on this forum I think that the bike is actually a 71 if I am reading things correctly. The date on the vin plate is 9/71 but it is titled as a 72.  Is this something I should change or does it not matter?
Here are the numbers
Cb750-1116488 engine
Cb750-1114331 frame plate

Welcome to the forum. Great pics which look 100% better with the white gone. Might be able to get some $$$ for those vintage bags and fairing on eBay to help supplement your bike project. Here is some info on the K1 & K2 model for you. Looks like you have a K1 model which was built in 1971 and not sold and titled until 1972. I don't know that it would be a benefit to try and change the title as long as you list it as a K1. Sort of depends on how strict your state is and how hard it would be to change. Stop in at your DMV and run it buy them. I have one of those strange ones too. I have a K1 built in 9/70 and titled as a 1970 because it sold that year.

The CB750K1 Four was sold from 1970-71 and was available in one of four colors: Candy Ruby Red, Candy Gold, Valley Green Metallic, or Candy Garnet Brown. The gas tank stripe was gold. The tank, side covers, and upper forks were of the basic color (red, gold, green, or brown). The side covers were smaller and there were no slots on the leading edge. There was a two-throttle cable system (pull open and pull closed). The headlight shell was also the basic color. The exhaust system was a 4-into-4. The engine was a 736cc SOHC 2-valve dry sump inline 4 cylinder linked to a 5-speed transmission and chain drive. Honda CB750K1 Wiring diagram

The CB750K2 Four was sold in 1972 and was available in one of three colors: Brier Brown Metallic, Flake sunrise Orange, or Candy Gold. The gas tank stripe was gold but as with previous models, the Gold tanks had a black stripe. The side covers were smaller than the K0 model and there were no slots on the leading edge. The upper forks were chrome. The headlight shell was black. The taillight and side reflectors were larger. There was a two-throttle cable system (pull open and pull closed). The exhaust system was a 4-into-4. The engine was a 736cc SOHC 2-valve dry sump inline 4 cylinder linked to a 5-speed transmission and chain drive.

A buddy of mine had it out at his farm. He hadn't ridden it in about 2 years so i talked him into selling it. He stopped riding it because it wasn't running very well. So we took the carbs apart and found one of the slides was sticking. Evidently he had tried to take the carbs apart before and had slightly bent the top of the slide and it was barely rubbing. We cleaned the carbs , "fixed" the sticky slide put new gas in and it fired right up and ran pretty well for not being started in 2 years. Set me back $700

Wow...you got a great deal for a running K1 at $700. Looks pretty much stock except for the exhaust, handlebars and cables, seat and rear blinker mount. That stuff is still available from Honda if you decide you want to restore to stock. What are your plans for it?

I am planning on making it my daily driver so that is my first goal.  But as I fix/replace things i'm going to try to put the best stuff on that i can afford. After looking at some "oem" and "nos"  it appears my budget will probably keep me from making it original.  I don't think I could ever talk the wife into letting me put a $1100 exhaust on a bike i spent $700 on.

The guy must have loved mudd flaps--both fenders & the chain.  The shocks do not appear original either--maybe a high performance adder?  All in all a running, titled, original paint K1 for $700 is automatic.

I guess he wanted to keep his white bags clean?  I noticed a home made side stand plate as well.

I have a 1971 in gold too.  Great bike and great colour.  Best of luck on what looks like a steal!

Sweet deal on a sweet bike. (+1 on ditching the white!!!!........especially the seat.). One easy way to tell if it is a 71' or 72' is to look at the upper triple tree. If the gauges are held on by bands....71'. If the gauges are bolted to a bracket that is bolted to the upper tree....72'. Hope this helps. If you find you need any 71' parts let me know. I have one that I am gonna part out. The seat is only good for the pan and the gas tank is trashed but there are other good usable parts there.

I had to go back and reread this and look more at the pics. First of all like Johnny said.....your  #'s show it's a 71' which is good......more rare but the parts are pricier too. I couldn't help you with the headlite or exhaust. Mine was given the good ole 70's chopper treatment........8-10" over forks, Bates custom headlight, 87 ft. high sissy bar, pull back bars. I had to comment on that wiring job also.....cracks me up everytime I see wire nuts used on anything but house wiring!!!!!

Thanks for all of the info everybody. As far as stock goes did the 71's not have a rear grab bar that rear fender seems forever long?

Here is a pic of the OEM left side handle which was standard on the K1. It is still available from Honda. I see them on eBay too. I think you may need it to lift that bike onto the center stand. Click the pic to enlarge it...

Here is a short video of the bike running after we fixed the sticking slide. Sorry about the quality.

haha, it's a blessing and a curse. Been doing photography on the side since highschool, gives you an eye for little details. Now I just need to take a step back and see my gold '71 like a "normal person" and stop being so nit picky . . .
