well the govt has come to a decision sort of. Christchurch has split into 4 zones
Red         to much land damage 6000 homes to be demolished
Orange    yet to be assesed properly  10,000 houses
White      hill side properties  if you are still there please wait
Green     not too much land damage, repairs can be started

and we managed 12 hours without another quake woohoo

So Scunny, are they going to open up more land to build those 6000 replacement houses on, or where are those residents going to go (if they want to stay  ???)?
Poor buggas, what a worry it must be for so many people. :(

The ironic part about that is out of this despair and destruction there will be some developers making big bucks, but I guess that's what makes the world go around. All the best mate.

rock and rolling, been having some pretty good ones the last few days. don't count the little ones.
590 buidings left to be demolished in the centre of town. looks a lot different now from a distance, the general public still aren't allowed into the cbd. work has just started on pulling down the Hotel Grand Chancellor, this 27 storey piece of junk has been holding things up in it's fall zone since it is on a huge lean and can't be dropped in the normal fashion.

Whoa, our center of town has a fouled building but earthquakes din't cause it, just idiocy. They've had it condemned for a couple years as they haven't opened it for what I know. Just put yellow tape around it, stay out. They are trying to boster it up I gather.

February 22nd, think about a 22 story building being thrown vertically at 2 G's  (twice normal gravity) then falling vertically in free-fall only to be met by another upthrust at another 2 G's.and you have the picture......

I was tempted to tell Scunny to "Harden the f..... up, mate",  then realised I'm feeling a bit fragile myself.

Rock on!

we had a 5.2  in the eastern part of the US.  It was the talk of the town for a day.  Wait til the big one predicted for Charleston South Carolina hits.  We will be in the shape you poor guys are in.  Mother nature cannot be bargained with.

haha TC, I have hardened up a tiny bit.
another street has been opened to public access, might have to take bikey in for a look. the quakes have quietened down a little, don't know if that's a good or bad sign.

????

I heard of the New Madras Fault, drove through there with Dad a few years ago. It rang the liberty bell or something like that, changed the direction of the Mississipi R.

There were a couple minor but measureable earthquakes under Oklahoma city area the other day, and in the same area in the last three years. I felt one, but basically nothing and a mile underground or more if I recall. Just sayin, ...what's going on underground.  We have the oldest mountains in the word perhaps. Used to be as big as the Himalayays they say. Only single celled organisims in the process of the rock that is now above sea level.    And yes, texas is just baha Oklahoma.

Hey Scunny the important thing is, have they got your local up and running yet or have you found a decent replacement close by.

I didn't realize y'all are such wimps in NZ, and to think I was made an honorary NZer on another forum.
We had a serious earthquake here in Virginia this year. The damage was terrible.

We had a 5.6 last night located 3 miles under Sparks, Oklahoma.  Not sure why I didn't feel it, I guess because I wasn't standing still. I was walking  to the grocery store and  employees were hanging out in front.  Inside the signs hanging from the ceiling were still swinging. They said a few things fell off of shelves. Not sure why I didn't feel it.

It was on NPR radio news just now.

Okay, here's some links.   I guess Geologists discovered the Seminole Uplift in 1927,  and I would assume they've been pumping oil there for eighty years or better.  Must be some voids there where oil used to be, makes me wonder if they have started to collapse.

I have heard of a sort of opposite situation (maybe it was Rocky Flats CO) where they were dumping things down an old cavern and it lubricated a fault and caused earthquakes.

Anyway, I guess it was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Oklahoma.
It was real, I missed it but should have felt it.  Maybe my senses weren't right because I was completely sober?  :-\

Big quake follows increase in Oklahoma rumblings
By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS, Associated Press – 19 hours ago
SPARKS, Okla. (AP) — Clouds of dust belched from the corners of almost every room in Joe Reneau's house as the biggest earthquake in Oklahoma history rocked the two-story building.

A roar that sounded like a jumbo jet filled the air, and Reneau's red-brick chimney collapsed and fell into the roof above the living room. By the time the shaking stopped, a pantry worth of food had been strewn across the kitchen and shards of glass and pottery covered the floor.

"It was like WHAM!" said Reneau, 75, gesturing with swipes of his arms. "I thought in my mind the house would stand, but then again, maybe not."

The magnitude 5.6 earthquake and its aftershocks still had residents rattled Sunday
