just caught up to this thread - sorry you guys got hit so hard.  hopefully things are progressing well and you're settled in at your new bar. ;)

this thread actually brings to mind something that i was thinking about the other day:  how to people in earthquake zones store their bikes?  do you just leave them on the kickstand and hope for the best if a quake hits, or are the wheel-locking stands common?  just curious. biggest quake i've been in is a 2.1, which happened in the mid 80s i think...

got my bikes lined up on their side stands in a north south orientation. They just jump around a bit. Had the 650 strapped down for a while.

The vid tour of the city was sobering. We were there the in April before the quake and stayed at the hotel opposite the cathedral. I t was a little comforting seeing that our hotel survived. We were back in Enzed on a cruise early this year but we couldn't go back into ChCh so visited Akaroa instead.
If if it gets too unsettling for you to stay there you could always move to the west island! lol.  But then we had a quake here in 89 when 13 people were killed. I was at work at the time (in a bank) not far from the centre - the whole building seemed to jump sideways a metre then back again. Our home, about 15ks away, suffered slight damage and there was scarcely a building anywhere that wasn't damaged in some way. It was just the one big shock then almost nothing afterwards, unlike your siituation.
Importantly, the pubs are still standing.

We had a 5.5 just this morning, good shake too, house fair moved. Checked bike and still standing. ;)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Bump.

Just had a couple shallow focus earthquakes. Felt both rumbles and figured it out before the news came on and confirmed. 4.3 or somesuch...

Jesus, Scunny  Walk out and kick the ground, sacrifice a virgin, something.
I know I hear stuff from the W coast about earth quakes and it seems to go in clusters, hopefully it's not Gaia deciding she's had enough of humanity go down and sacrifice a couple or more pints to her. Luck.

For christ sakes Scunny, if you sacrifice a virgin, use the "pork sword" mate, you may want to reenact the whole thing a few times to make sure you did it right.... ;D ;)

Bill, just been round to a mates place for a couple of home brews, wicked stuff.
Mick, great idea about the virgins but I don't know any  ;D

can't believe I had a panic attack about such a small quake.

Don't look now Scunny but you have a tsunami heading your way. 8.2 earthquake in northern Chile last night. My good friend is a refugee from Chile and still has fmaily down there, although not near this quake center.
