Sitting on the bike while it's on the center or sidestand
« on: April 12, 2006, 09:13:19 AM »
This can't be good for the bike, yet I see period articles or advertisments with guys sitting on the bikes in the "riding position" or just sitting on the bike chillin' while the bike is on the centerstand or sidestand.

It seems that this would stress the frame and cause fatigue or cracks.  I can't see this as a good activity.

I agree with ya 150% on this.
I use my kickstand (ditched the center-stand for weight savings) to hold up my bike
while it is parked, I am working on it , etc. If I am on the bike, th kickstand is either
up or not on the ground.

The last thing I need is for the kickstand to snap, especially If I am on the bike at the time.

Common sense goes a long way......

I could maybe see an issue with the kick stand but not the center. that sucker is built heavy. could almost knock out an elephant with the thing!

I sit on mine all the time...

If I'm waiting at the side of the road I'll lean it onto the side stand, flick down the rear footpeg and sit sideways watching the world go by.

Done this since the 70's with no problems.

I sit and watch the telly from my bike, I don’t have  centre stand yet but I would prefer to use the main stand then I could rest my beer on the tank because just now it slides off because of the angle of the bike.  I have to make some use of the thing I can’t ride it just now my engine's not finished, but I have to say the frame is solid and all the welds are new.  ;D

I've only seen one CB500F and one CB400F with frame damage. (weld cracking around sidestand mounting)) Bike probably isnt heavy enough, even with a rider to do much harm.
Its common on some other manufacturers though where a large 'hole' appears where the side stand used to be

I've seen & had dirt bikes that the side stand was bent some probably from sitting on them.
Can't say that I've ever seen or heard of any street bike with that problem and I don't know of any center stands that would be damaged from sitting on them. Later on, Bill.

Like Steve, I pose on the bike with the sidestand down on a regular basis. Have done so on a bunch of different bikes with no problems, although I was never brave enough to try it with the Ducati self-retracting sidestand.

And I've also spent a great deal of time on the centerstand making "vroom-vroom" noises. So far the only problem has been getting caught by the wife.  :D

I do the vroom vroom on my 400 as well, but only on the center stand. The welds and the actual sidestand its self look a little too delicate to be leaning on with my whole body, but if people have been doing it for years without problem, more power to them!

I'll lean against, but not sit with the sidestand down; minimize the pressure on the stand.  As for the centerstand, that seems to be built to take almost anything.

My 400 has a weld repair where the sidestand attaches to the frame.  I don't know the story behind it, but it doesn't seem to be from rust damage.  I thought I'd read where this was a common failure.  I figure I'm better off not adding my 190# to the stress on that connection.  My rugged, manly posterior won't fit sideways on the solo seat anyway.

So there is no danger of the frame being stressed or bent in half with the centerstand being the bending point?

Ghoulie, the main stand is not a bend point its a  pivot point, the bike will also be loaded on the back wheel or front depending how you sit on the seat.

It just seems that with the bike on the centerstand, the weight is on the front wheel and the stand.  Now you sit on the seat, and your weight will be behind the centerstand, but not far enough to tip it to the back wheel, and it would stress the frame members with the downward pressure.

Guess not though.

Well that's good to know.

Ghoulie when you sit on the bike and ride, the forces on the frame are at the max especially in corners have a look at the at the small bolt that’s holding the rear shocks on the frame that thing is getting pounded and keeping your arse from dragging on the tyre check if yours is bent? Probably not…Mr Honda has done his calculations and sitting on a bike on its stand will do it no harm and I’m sure if the frame is solid it won’t bend it. They do flex quite a bit compared with modern stuff  ;D
