10 is not enough, another sohc added. WITH A BROKEN CASE
« on: April 07, 2011, 06:04:27 AM »
Just picked up a 1974 Honda CB750  70's cruiser.  Bike runs, albeit poorly, and shifts, may need some clutch work.  Less than 20k and  supposedly had the top and lower ends rebuilt.  Check all the chrome additions: gauge covers, headlight shell, footpegs, case savers, luggage rack and sissy bar, ribbed engine covers, dual exhaust and horns:D :D. That fancy seat is a custom covered Corbin-how 70's is that design stitched in 8).  But best of all are the wheels, I debated with myself for almost a half hour on whether to buy or not but the wheels tipped the balance and I pulled the trigger.

Plan is to make it a totally retro 1970 cruiser. I have a trunk that will be mounted to the rack.  Also have a Vetter SS fairing that I may mount if I can find a bracket for the 750. The Vetter at one time was mounted to one of the 400 fours I own :'( ???. First step will be full tune and service followed by an extensive test ride.  Then major clean up and hopefully ride it in the Relay.

That sissy bar alone would have brought out my checkbook! :D

Hope it makes the Relay!

Thanks for the compliments.  Work will be on hold until I finish the 400 four I am working on.  I will be looking for a bracket for a Vetter SS fairing for a 750 and leather saddle bags-preferably red and a set of replacement covers from this site....and bell bottoms, denim jacket and platform shoes 8) 8)......and hair ::) ::)...Larry

Well I got the bike running well enough to test ride.  Cleaned the carbs I got from a forum member, rebuilt brake mc and caliper, tune up and went down the street.  1st to 2nd shift fine, 2nd to 3rd rough, 3rd to 4th rough and 4th to 5th even rougher.   Pulled the linkage cover hoping it was shift drum linkage and found this :( :( :(

Any theories as to cause?  Mine is whoever put the cases together did not have the spline lined up and caused the case to break.  Engine is still together

Do not know if I want to repair or part out, right now I have 1000 invested with purchase, title and carbs.

Are those wheels Lesters or Yamaha OEM units?

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Lesters to the best of my knowledge.  If they were Yamaha there would be a logo somewhere.  However, it does not say Lester anywhere but they look like every Lester wheel I've seen, which aren't all that many...Larry

I don't know any of the logo details of those Yammy wheels, but I think you're right - the spokes on the RD/XS wheels flare out at the hub, and your wheels don't:

Syscrush,    yout wheel  is very different than my wheel.  I am not sure though if mine are Lester-I did a very little bit of research on Google image and saw Lester stamped in most of the wheels.  My faulty memory vaguely remembers Yamaha stamping there logo on most everything.   Thanks for the input...Larry

For the record, that wheel isn't mine - just a pic of an XS/RD wheel I dug up online.

I think I'm going to get hooked up with some Morris alu wheels.

That is indeed an odd breakage.  Does that lip serve to retain the bearing?

I have never seen that breakage and by looking at the parts fiche it seems there is a locating clip in that bearing.  PO told me the trans had been rebuilt-so my deduction is the mechanic did not have the bearing retainer clip lined up, squished the cases down and the movement of the shaft during the little bit of driving I did caused the case to split. And who knows what other damage. :'(  Very disheartening as I probably spent too much for the bike at 900 if the trans needs to rebuilt again, as well as the cases repaired if possible.  Oh well, only way to find out is take apart, but that will have to wait as I have two of my three 400 fours to finish....Larry

Well, let's update this thread....

Larry sold the bike to Matt, (McWilliams) they changed out the motor.  Matt never gets around to it, loses interest in 750's and sells it to me!

I had it shipped to Texas and now it sits in the back of the Batcave awaiting a restore.

Don't know whatever happen to that seat?!

Yes, they do!  But I am committed to getting this one back on the road, just not anytime soon.

Have not looked for the logos yet, Eric, it's covered up way in the back of the 'cave. I plan to bring it home in 2 weeks and pull the wheels, they are being sold off to cover shipping of the bike [Matt's suggestion]. Actually, that money will go towards the H2 motor rebuild!

The [small] Batcave is stuffed with SOHC and the H2 basket case, the last '74 CB550 I bought I had to stash elsewhere.
