Glaze busting?
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:50:43 AM »
If an engine's top end has been torn down, say, to fix a base gasket oil leak, and the cylinders are within spec, the rings are all good and none of them are stuck, would it be necessary to hone the cylinders to bust off the glaze? Or could (should) it be put back together as is?

Hypothetical situation, of course.  ;) ::)

Hypothetically if you're not going to re-ring it, I'd not deglaze it. If anything, I'd lap the valves, if they leak after a kerosene leak test, and replace the guide seals if they are old.

Same rings on same pistons, don't hone. New rings, hone.
