1973 CB500four going Cafe
« on: February 25, 2011, 02:38:39 PM »
Just picked up a  '73 CB500four of Craigslist for not very much $  ;D Can't complain about that. I've been toying with the idea of building a Cafe Racer for while now but never could find the right bike at the right time. A couple of weeks ago this one popped up. It was close, it was cheap enough, had a title for once and most importantly, the weather wasn't totally crap! I work entirely too many days, 6 a week, so I don't have all that much time to work on it. So, when I do have time, I try to make the most of it. Working on bikes or projects is nothing new. So here she is:

The Day we picked her up. That's my daughter. She's my little helper  ;D

The PO bought it and never really did anything with it. He started it and parked it since gas came pouring out of the carbs. The guy before that mounted that tank, for whatever reason. Might be an old ATV Tank or of a XL something....not sure, but it was the first thing to come of lol

Of the truck:

Like that Tank? It's for Sale :D

Miles? uhmmmm...

It is Nebraska in the winter so trying to heat my shop wasn't gonna happen...so the Garage it is. Sorry Honey but you have to park outside for a little while  ;D

Of course to do it right I built me a little work table:

My other addiction: VW's  8)

Got the Table all built and quite a bit done on day 1:

Really like that exhaust:

A couple of days later another Craigslist Score. All of that for $80  8)
Drill press and grinder, new in the box:

This is going to be priceless this time of the year!

Finally got a little time in the Garage again and pulled the carbs.

Not as bad bad as I thought:

The Front Brake has seen much better days though:

Couldn't resist. Had to try the buffer out real quick  ;D

The Tank I bought here. Thanks again, joshuanagao. Good guy there!!!!
Looks much better!

Exhaust came off without a glitch as well. Gotta like that.

Weight savings:

Manual downloaded and printed. Thanks to the sleeves it'll always be grease free.

Stainless steel Hardware for the Carbs courtesy of Fastenal.

Finally got the engine out. That was not all that much fun by myself.

More to come really soon. I want to have this thing on the road by spring. Still have to fix my compressor so I can start painting stuff. Rattle can doesn't cut it.

Yup. '85 Mk2 bought from the original owner when we lived in Seattle. More of a non winter daily driver ;) Too much salt and junk on the road out here.
I would love an R32!!!!

Tank looks great!  The project seems like it is coming along nicely.  I want to see where you take it.

Looks like a great project.  Have fun with it!

BTW, I had an MK2 GTI 16v for a while.  Fun car!  Your Golf sure is clean!  Not too many of them around anymore.

Subscribed.  I've got a '71 500/4, and my dad's a VW mechanic.  Used to tell me stories of putting 356 motors in bugs and drag racing 'em :)

Good work so far!

Less Progress than I was hoping for. The weather turned nasty cold again there for a while. I ran the Kerosene heater out of fuel once and now it has a really hard time starting if it starts at all. I finally made up my mind on which tail to use and how to modify it. It's all torn apart and I have just about all the parts bought to get a lot closer to finish it. I'll take some pics hopefully tonite and post them up. The Golf is going up for sale I think. I'm itching for a Westfalia Camper  ;D Anyone need it?  8)

Just thought I'd say great project, and I love your Golf.  My Golf:

Also an '85, but not nearly as clean as yours.  Good luck on your bike!

Just a little sneek peak. Sorry about the pic. #$%*ty Cell pic with the battery light blinking  :-[

Frame hacked and most of the tabs shaved. Ran out of cutting wheels to finish up...oooops. Center stand is coming off next.
Garage is a freakin mess..still haven't moved everything into the shop.

This is what took me so damn long. Finding a seat I like and make it a little shorter to flow better. I think it works  ;D

This is part of reason why things haven't gone as fast as I wanted them to. Found this and had to have it. So the Golf is hopefully going to a new home on sunday and then I need to take a couple of days off and get this beauty.

I like your style... I picked up a 72 CB500 for cheap on CL last summer, and I dailyed my 87 GTI for the last year until I picked up a 04 Passat Wagon in February.  I'll be keeping an eye on this, like where you are going with it!
