Carb kits are going to be hard to find.  A single carb conversion is around and very preferable.

I'm jealous.

single carb or duel carbs?.. any site info would be appreciated.. im gonna check it out in the morning as long as  the bike doesnt have a serious amount of rust in concernable places.. and the owner isnt too shady... im hoping it will be fixable for under a total of a thou investment.. so 500 more..... would it be bad(era specific) for me to paint the whole thing another color or would it  be uncoothe?

Single.  But in searching, I found this;

http://www.randakks.com/TechTip43.htm

Randakks is a good source for stuff, and they say they have carb kits.

Hard to find??  Pshhh....

Head over to the Naked Gold Wing Club forum for all the support and information you'll ever need.  http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/index.php

And those Randakk kits are the best!  Top of the line quality kits, for sure.

AFAIK, the only 'Gold Wing' issues are the timing belts.  Those in the know ASSUME they haven't been changed and will change 'em out unless the PO can prove otherwise...    But, even then, they're readily available and the job is straightforward.

Otherwise, it's all the 'normal' bike stuff - tires, brakes incl. fluid, carb work, battery, etc.

Enjoy!!

Kirk

This. NGW knows what's up and randakk has some crazy builds.
The other things to look out for are of course coolant leaks or problems with the system. Oil leaks, blue smoke after it's warmed up, bring a battery and check the electrics.
If you can take the timing belt cover off and check that. Rust in gas tank (under seat)

idk... Complete overhaul could mean a lot of things.
You could probably do better than $1000.

If you need parts or advice message me. I've got 2 GL1000's

carb kits are not hard to find head over to www.ngwclub.com and check it out there is a link on the front page for radikks to get the carb kits and other parts. you will need to replace the cam belts which you can get at most auto parts store. while on NGW search for a cross over parts list the belt number for the 1000 wing is different tham my 1200 and 1500 wing. www.classicgoldwings.com is another good site for you and i am a mod over at www.goldwingowners.com

When I bought my 75 GL1000 it had been sitting for 18 years.
The bike had been inside and covered but it still needed to come completely apart.
The paint and chrome were in good shape but all the usual things that you have to do on an SOHC4 had to be done. The Carbs had to come apart (a couple of times) the calipers and master cylinders had to be rebuilt, the points replaced, gaped and timed, a few thing that SOHC4's don't have, the cooling system needed to be flushed, the thermostat replaced, differential greased and lube changed and the timing belts replaced.

One of worst things was taking out and cleaning the gas tank, its under the seat and you have to take everything from the gas tank back (and I do mean everything) off except the swingarm to get at it.

This is restoration page for my GL1000, http://www.peterbylt.com/gl1000.htm

As has already been mentioned Randakk http://www.randakks.com/ is an excellent source for parts and information, the naked Goldwing club http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/ Is as good in its own way for early Goldwings as this site is for the SOHC4's. Another good Goldwing site is the Steve Saunders site http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/

I enjoy riding this bike a lot, it gets lots of attention wherever I go, it runs very smooth has lots of power and is very fast.

as above id look at the cooling system,if no or the wrong coolant is used or its old and stagnant significant corrosion can occur, yours might be ok,id replace the water pump and any hoses/thermostat anyway,is the bike running?,have it warm and use a cooling system pressure tester if you can borrow or hire one
