Picking up a 76LTD Wing (With Pics) Now Owner

I'm going to put a down payment on a 76LTD Wing and will have it next weekend.

i just picked up a 76 GL1000 too, :o

yours yellow. :) I love that color.

well have to hook up and ride.
there is an old bike run weekend after mothers day from golden to golden about 140 mile loop.

I'm GL1-242 on Naked Goldwings  :) it is a great site. I did 12 days 3500 miles with another member and met up at Crater lake.

That doesn't look to be a stock color wire from the ignition. I hope something else is in there other than points.
He said the carbs were just gone through.
It also has a 78 exhaust and headers on it.

What a shame someone let this classic get into that condition. You have your work cut out for you if you want it back to stock. You can replace the aftermarket chromed crap and the exhaust with salvage yard parts. The ignition lead appears to be from either a Dyna III or a Dyna S. That's a good thing, but check out the split timing technique on Randakk's website. I can't make out the paint color, but the striping is wrong for sure. And that seat!  :o  Regarding the carbs, I'm wondering about the thoroughness of someone who would "go through" the carbs and not clean up that fuel residue mess all over the crankcase. I think you'd be smart to get a master carb overhaul kit from Randakk's, and do it right before trying to ride it. Otherwise, you'll probably be chasing after all kinds of fuel system issues.  Here's a pic of mine for visual reference.

Wow that is in very nice condition.
If I was to bring back to stock, I need
headlight bucket.
fuse holder.
I'll keep the electronic ignition.
Have fork ears on there way.
I have a left header and a complete exhaust. Just in need of a right header.
Try and find another or make a seat.
1 emblem for the side cover.

Hey All,
I am the proud owner of a 76 LTD. I got a smoking deal.  I think I did.
Just need to find out why it won't go forward.
The clutch has good pressure and drive shaft isn't broken.
I have not been into a clutch on the wings yet but have a couple spare baskets and a motor I can practice on.
The starter sticks or for some reason making a growing noise after startup. Sounds like it isn't disengaging properly.
Has a Martek electronic ignition.
The oil was so black wasn't even funny. Now has fresh oil in it.
Antifreeze is good.
Tomorrow night i'll be doing a compression test.
Not sure how to post pics so if someone wants to post up for me I'll send them to you.

This bike was a factory special. The shelter hinges, side stand, petcock, and engine mounts were all chromed from the factory. Valve and timing covers weren't.

The growling noise is coming from the starter motor. But it's the starter clutch that's sticking, not the starter motor. Those parts tend to rust up after extended non-use. You need to pull the engine and remove the rear cover to access that part.

Even though the clutch springs have good pressure, the plates could be totally shot. Release the clutch cable from the clutch lever, and make the initial clutch adjustment with the screw and locknut under the clutch cover plate. Then reconnect the cable, and adjust the slack at the handlebar. If you still get no drive in gear, remove the rear wheel, and have a look at the splines on the wheel spider and in the final drive. I hope this bike isn't in the same condition on the inside as on the outside, but that's often the case with old bikes.

Yeah, but they've been out of business for a long time. I don't have instructions or wiring diragram for their Wing ignition, but I do have it for the Kawasaki 900/1000 if that'll help. My advice is to not screw with it if it's working. Just clean and tighten any loose connections you might find.

Well the PO said it needed a clutch.

Finally got to work on it tonight.
I took off the rear clutch cover and loosened the 12mm nut, turned out the adjustment screw till it was wobbly. It was pretty tight had lots of resistance already. Turned it back in till I felt resistance, backed it off 3/4 turn and tightened locking nut.

WOW it goes forward.  ;D

I feel for his 100th anniversary HD he just bought.

Clutch is slipping very bad. Going to do a couple flushes and if that doesn't work I'll be changing out some clutch disc's.
One good thing is I don't need to pull the engine for disc swap.
Best thing is I have a spare that look's great.

Your description of how much pressure was on the clutch lifter screw pretty much says it all. It was screwed in so far that it held the clutch partially disengaged. Expect to find friction plates worn to the bone. When you replace the plates, pay attention to which direction the spiral groove faces. The shop manual has a good line drawing to explain it. The one plate with the different sized tabs is the last one into the basket.

If the headlight ears are still under the Vetter faring (most of them are) then all you need is the a complete headlight bucket assembly off of a 70's 750. The one I used on my 75 GL1000 was off of a 75 750 fit perfectly.

The front directionals off of a 75 750 will work as well. I had to buy the mounting bolts to mount the directionals onto the headlight ears. Surprisingly they were still available from Honda for cheap.
