My 1976 CB550k
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:49:09 AM »
So I picked up a pretty solid cb550k about a month ago.  So far, with the help of a good friend, we have:

Cleaned the carbs, replace some gaskets.
Had two new dunlop gold seal tires mounted.
Rebuilt front brake caliper.
New battery.
Clean chain and sprockets.
New plugs.
Rebuilt master cylinder.
Hours and hours of cleaning and polishing.
Straitened rear signal light brackets.

Will also be changing the oil, checking tappet clearance, and checking the points.

Any other recommendations on things that should be done?

I have this same bike.

Looks like a great start!  Seems like you are headed toward the full 3000 mile tune-up (including dynamic timing), and that's definitely the best thing to start with.

Checking the resistance of the plug caps is a good tip for early on, let's you know that you have a good line to the spark.  Hopefully the wires from the coils are good already.

Fresh air filter is always good too.

Good luck and enjoy!

I also have the same bike! Check my avitar. The F is a 1976 also!
When I got the K I pretty much did what you did to yours. Same problems.
The carbs were the worst of the problems but finally got it running.
It only had 6500 miles on it and hadn't been run in 30 years!
I did add electronic ignition cause I had timing those dual points.
My biggest problem now are the pipes. The've become religous. They are holy!

The only thing I can add is to check the chain for stretching.
Good luck with your K and happy motoring!

I want to die like my grandfather did...in his sleep and not screaming like the passengers in his car!
