What's it worth?
« on: March 19, 2011, 07:03:58 PM »
You guys probably hate threads like this but I was talking to my father in law today about his '78 750K. I finally made a little headway with him. He said make him an offer. So, here's what he's got;

9100 miles
All/mostly original, the only thing I know not original is horns
Complete bike
Mufflers hollowed out/starting to rust
needs tires/just because of age
backrest/luggage rack
plexi II faring
rims/headers in decent shape
some light rust pitting on upper fork tubes
seat good shape, probably original
original paint probably 9 out of 10
needs battery
hasn't run in probably 4-5 years

I'm not sure what a real barn find is worth but I'm not going to haggle with a relative. I want to offer him a fair price but I'm not doing the Am. Pickers thing with him either. Any comments from those in the know is greatly appreciated.

With a title start at $500. Start explaining 4 or 5 yrs.of sitting is worst than ten running I have the same bike plan on spending $800-$1000.Parts add up Quick.Mine was in a lot better shape than your description pick it up for $100. The guy that had it took it to the Honda shop to get it running been sitting 5-6 yrs but was stored inside. Honda wanted $700. to get it running 10 hrs.mostly carb work yep $65/hr.

Take a lookie see inside the tank.  Look for rust.  If it's clean that's great.  Make sure the engine isn't locked.  Assume you'll need to go through the carbs, get new tires, recondition or replace the manifold rubbers, rebuild the MC and caliper in the front, maybe need a new chain and sprockets, battery, electrical work, possibly some seals.

Sounds pretty nice... I'd give from 6 to 7 hundred for it.

The tank looks pretty good, only minor rust. It actually looks better than the bike I'm riding now.

No I won't be selling the backrest, my daughter will like it as much as your girl would. ;D

This would be one of the easier referbs that I've done.

It's worth at least a thousand, he should sell it to you for that.
Another $500+ for tires, battery and exhaust and you'll have a great bike.

Well, I was finally able to unbury the bike. Here she is:

This is a one owner bike with a little over 9K on the clock. Like I said, the mufflers are trash but the rest of the bike is all there. He even has the original tool kit and owners manual under the seat. Other than a little wire rigging he's done and a auto horn its pretty much untouched.

Boy I had forgotten how small the tires are on these babys.

Hmmm last model CB750 SOHC (not at all desirable or collectible compared to the first few K series) with rotted pipes and gummed up carbs, not running. New rubber and rebuild kits are a given. Depending on what part of the US you are in I would expect a sound running machine for around 2K. So to get the exhaust replaced and the other odds and ends totaling up around $1500 offering  him $500 is about right. Don't forget to stress the fact about the exhaust being rotten and being the single most expensive part on the bike. And who knows what else once you start digging in.

Price the exhaust system even if not available and a new set of tires and present that to him. 9K miles is good as are the shield and back rest/sissy bar. Bike basically looks good. I paid $1800 for my 75 750F new with a $1900 list. I'd offer $500 and definitely not go above $1000 only due to the mileage. Here's hoping the mechanicals are in working order at that price. You'd better have an option for a new exhaust if you get it.

Oh hell, I just saw that it was your father-in-law. $500 max and he can ride it occasionally!  ;) Sounds like your mother-in-law wants him to get rid of it. Work on her. When's your birthday? XMas is not too far off. Give him a grandkid. ETC
