well im doing it "rustolium" paint job
« on: April 07, 2011, 01:54:22 PM »
So it's started. i stripped down my tank cowl and side covers did all my proper prep work...

I have chosen to go this way. do to the high prices of paint jobs here in Vancouver. shops just basically giving me the finger and telling me outrageous prices. So iv been reading, and reading, and reading up on rustolium/tremclad here in Canada.

Being a Painter I know allot about different coatings and what not I have sprayers and all that fun stuff and know that its 90% prep 10% painting...so why not give it ago.

I won't be spraying it I'm using a high density foam roller, Black gloss tremclad, and mineral spirits. as well as 400 grit wet/dry, 800 grit wet/dry and 1000 grit wet/dry. using a mixture of about 50/50 tremclad to mineral spirits. making sure not to over load my roller. I am applying 2 coats of painter per day for a total of about six coats. I am sanding every 2 coats. after the first 2 I used 400 grit wet sanding. just put down my 3rd and 4th coats today. tomorrow I will wet sand with 800 grit and put on 5 and 6 then Saturday will be doing a final wet sand with 1000 Grit and doing my buffing then polishing.....So far looks really good will post pictures when I am done.

so I spent about 25 Bucks on supplies

Good luck and post pics as you go. That would make a nice write up in the painting FAQ section.

Looking forward to pics.  Very cool.  Why did you decide to roll instead of spray?  I'm looking to do a rattle can paint so I'll be paying close attention.  Good luck!

I was wondering the same thing. I know you don't have the mess of overspray, etc., but are there any other benefits?

Somewhere buried on this site is some posts on people doing just what you are. They looked great it seems the prep and finishing make the difference. In my grandfathers day that is how the best paint jobs were done, they used a brush sine rollers did not come along till later.

the reason i went with a roller instead of spraying is simple... im working in a smaller space with lots of other bikes and cars  over spray on the fathers gsa1200 wouldn't go over to well.

the reason i haven't gone with spray bombs is because i went that route already. with out a proffesional clear coat your paint will melt as soon as gas hits it.

OK so update on the paint job.....

I messed it up it looked great before my final wet sand and buff no dips nothing.

the problem i had was that its still a little cold  in the garage and even though it looked dry and felt dry it wasn't.

when i went and put my compound on and polish it it just made huge swirl marks all over... anyways took it back down to square one and am now doing at flat black with a gloss green stripe.

i have way to much time on my hands and Yes this time i will be bringing the parts inside to dry....
