Hosting a small website is really cheap now.

I paid 12 Euro for a year recently here in the Netherlands (that's not a .com but .nl registration), for a small website for my business with a couple of e-mail adresses. I think wherever you live they have similar prices, and a .com domain is not much more expensive either.
I'm pretty sure you can find something under $30 with a .com domain included.

I think the biggest cost is building the website. I got a friend to do it for free, but he sure isn't in a hurry to finish it.... ;)

(off topic: where ever, where-ever, wherever....why does the "e" disappear when you combine these two words?)

It's like "no one", as in "no one showed up for the ride today"  You wouldn't want noone as this becomes "newnee".  But where ever is like this:
where ever adv. Variant of wherever.
wher·ev·er (hwâr-µv“…r, wâr-) adv. 1. In or to whatever place: used red pencil wherever needed. 2. Also where ever. Where: Where ever have you been so long? See Usage Note at  whatever. --wher·ev·er conj. In or to whichever place or situation: He seems to make enemies wherever he goes.

Most ISP's provide disk space and very simple templates for creating your own web site if you are interested in doing it yourself. It's not very difficult, and in a way, you are already paying for the space anyway via your monthly ISP charge/fee.

I assume you want your own identity.

Some hosts worth looking at:

godaddy.com - as low as $3.50/month

google.com - check out google apps; if it offers what you need, it is free and has a lot to offer.  The web builder tools are a bit simplistic, but it can be a good business collaboration tool.

There are plenty of others.  Which is best really depends how much flexibility you need - lots of hosts give you a set of apps that you can customize at will, but some are significantly better than others if you are writing your own web app and need things like shell access and support for different development environments.  If you are starting at that end - development platform already set - then check the forums and mailing lists related to the dev platform for recommendations on good hosts.

just to host something i whip up myself.

but, i don't want it to look like every other website  that is hosted by a particular place because they only have a select few tools.

But that means dealing with Microsoft - surely not a good thing  :o

I bought my Domain Name for about £5 for 2 years I then divert that to my free isp supplied web space. You should be able to find free site creation software which is very similar to a DTP program, there are also free templates to help you get started.

but, i don't want it to look like every other website  that is hosted by a particular place because they only have a select few tools.

How much content?  Images, text, applications?  There are a lot of tools out there, from wordpress to drupal, that are readily available from web hosts.  They are all highly customizable, but I think it is best, if you are doing this yourself, to settle on one and then learn how to customize it and work up your own template.  Pick something common and you'll find tons of resources including people you can pay to do the customization if your time is best spent elsewhere and you have the $$ to spend hiring someone else to do the work.

I would think of what you want to do and which of the many web apps helps you do what you want, then pick a host that supports that app well.  If you can afford $60-$75 a year, you'll find a web host that will provide about anything you'd need to support a realtively sophisticated site.

If all you need is a bare-bones minimal site, look at Google or Microsoft's free options - I know Google lets you set it up with your own domain name.  You can, in fact, go to Google and purchase your domain name and set up your site in just a few minutes.

another vote for godaddy. I used them once as a joke to a friend. i think I paid 12.00 for the domain and a year of hosting, some special and wa slike, hey, $12 to play with a friend, why not.

Anyways, if you're serious, this is what I do, but it's a bit more expensive.
directnic.com for the actual domain name, my .com if you will
asmallorange.com for the hosting, they're the ones holding my files, I had a plan for something like $5 a month, but they had a deal for lifetime hosting, which I bought, it was like $150, it's almost paid for itself at this point...
