Progress on the sandcast.....
« on: April 11, 2006, 07:32:57 PM »
Wow....whoever said powercoating looks good was "under
exaggerating"  ;D Just got back all the parts today and they
really look great.....and the "vin" plate survived!  I was fortunate
and they took it off before they baked the frame even though
I failed to tell them to do so....one Karma point for them.

All the zinc bolts and parts went to the re-coater today. Now if I can just
get the chrome back I can start putting it back together.

Looked at the drive sprocket last night and .....guess what....a
16 tooth sprocket.  I guess it had never been changed to the
17 tooth "chain break fix".  Also note that the "vin" label has no
frame number at all.  The only one is stamped into the opposite
side of the headstock.  I can picture the guy on the line with the
hand punch going "ping..ping".  ;D

Now if I can just figure a way to get the smell of Gunk off my body............ ::)

How much pep do you lose with the 17-tooth sprocket?

They partially compensated by increasing the teeth count of the
rear sprocket....can't remember how many they added.

Now my dilemma is whether to change the sprockets.  I don't want
to run sprockets that carry the risk of having the chain break.  :-\

I don't know if the technology is available in a 630 chain, but if an R1 doesn't break its modern 530 chain then nothing a CB750 - with any front sprocket on it - can do to a comparable 630 could make it break... a sweat.

I'll bet a modern chain, even a 530, would be enough for the original-spec sprockets.

The primary chain might need to be upgraded as well because I hear that they would let go as well.

A 17 toothe was the fix for poor chains in 69. 35 years later chain breakage is not an issue. 17 tooth will give you a little more top end and unless your a maniac like we were as kids in 69 you will not notice much difference in torque. Don't stress over one primary drive tooth. The way we ride today I would go with the more tooth drive sprocket. More rear teeth will undo what more front teeth accomplish. More rear teeth creates more torque and less top end. I'm not fast off the line anymore so I go with reduced RPM at cruising speeds More front and standard rear tooth counts. Eli

Thanks Elisent.....I think I'm getting paranoid about the sandcast
cases.  You are right, chains are much improved today. I don't know
what type of chain was on the bike....I've sorta been ignoring it until
the stuff that needs to be sent out is done...but it has no master link
and looks relatively new.  I will get a new one just so I know what's on
there though.  The sprockets look great so I think I will go with them
for now.
